According to my field instructor the most frequently encountered ethical concerns or dilemma in my practicum setting regarding social workers’ ethical responsibilities to clients is the client’s right to self-determination based on the fact that DCS often times will establish the goals that need to be met by the family and restrict their options, staff members believing that they know what is best for the client therefore telling the client what they need to do and how to do it, and the client not being well informed about the choices and rights that they have. In the area of the social workers’ ethical responsibilities to colleagues the ethical responsibility of consultation is believed to be the most encountered ethical concern of my field instructor. This believe stems from the fact that staff members do not keep themselves well informed about their colleagues areas of expertise so consultation does not occur as often as it should. Lastly, the ethical dilemma that occurs the most in the area of the social workers’ ethical responsibility in the practice setting is in regards to billing. There has been some concerns of staff members billing for services that are not provided to clients along with some staff double billing for services.

...that I know that I must be competent, continue to learn, and keep up to date on the changes that occur through research. Furthermore, I clearly understand the importance of the clients’ privacy and right to confidentiality in the helping process. The client must feel that their information and situation will be protected at all times to ensure trust to be formed in the helping relationship. However the clients do need to be informed of situations where information must be shared to protect others and society as a whole. Lastly, derogatory language is important to me because I have heard social workers use it when communicating about a client and I feel that is disrespectful not only to the client but to the entire social work profession. No matter the client’s situation or the choices a client has made the client is still a valuable individual that deserves respect.
