Seeing photos of suffering animals being locked inside cages in laboratories is heart wrenching. More than 100 million animals are used in scientific researches every year (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals PETA, 2011). They wait in pain, fear and loneliness with tubes and chemical substances inside their body for the day of freedom which does not even exist. Being the sacrifices of animal testing, they are used to assess the safety and effectiveness of medicines, cosmetic products and also to explore how human body works (Murnaghan, 2011). Animal testing refers to the use of non-human animals in experiments. The problem of animal testing is heartbreaking; nevertheless, by pushing government agencies to stop funding experiments on animals, by enforcing law on animal right and by educating the public, it is believed that the trend could be ceased. Animal testing is a deep-rooted problem as many scientific fields have been using animal on their researches for a long time, from drug, food, cosmetic tests to medical experiments in universities. Animals are treated inhumanely and cruelly under these tests. They are forced to inhale toxic smoke, have corrosive chemicals applied to their eyes and skin or have surgeries done to their brain and eye (PETA, 2011). In 2010, there were 1.28 million of animals and 100 million mice and rats used in experiments in the US (U.S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, 2011). Most animals used in research either died during experiments or were killed afterwards. There are some major contributing factors leading to the widespread of animal testing. One of the causes is the similarity that humans and animals share. Indeed, animals are treated as a ... ... middle of paper ... ... of respecting animal rights. The Consumer Council should promote the “cruelty-free labeling” so that consumers would raise their attention when they shop. Education has a long-lasting effect because it could change the value set of the whole generation. Though education may not have an instantaneous effect on the situation, it is still believed that this could solve the problem in the long run as it will raise the public attention and decrease the demand for such products. Although the problem of animal testing is devastating, it is curable by ending funds that support inhumane experiments, by enforcing law to protect animal rights and by educating the general public. We cannot and should not tolerate the cruel animal testing anymore. Everyone, including the government, companies and the public, should take his own responsibilities and fight for animal right.
