When writing, there is much that goes on within our brains. The frontal lobe is the part of the brain that helps us write and speak. Writing is linked to spelling and reading because reading depends on letter recognition. Students become familiar with letters through writing. When a student manipulates the curves and lines of letters, he uses sight and touch, which reinforces the shapes of the letters into memory. Learning about letters also promotes curiosity about their sounds. Sound and hearing is brought into play as the student begins sounding out letters and words. As they write, students learn that print is actually an ordered sequence of letters, instead of a random jumble. If a child does not learn to recognize letters and words instantly, he will have a very difficult time learning letter sounds and recognizing actual words. Learning to read will be extremely difficult.
In the book “The Shallows” Nicholas Carr really stress how technology is ruining many brains. He believes in the natural ways of learning, the way of learning that drives a person away from technology. What Nicholas Carr fail to realize is that technology is toughening children’s ability to gather information quickly and thoroughly. Nicholas Carr said, “The net’s interactivity gives us powerful new tools for finding information, expressing ourselves, and conversing with others. It also turns us into lab rats. Contently pressing levers to get tiny pellets of social or intellectual nourishment.” This usage of technology by children has claim to be handy in writing skills because children are able to access sites and games that can help their writing performance. Writing and reading are two essential skills that we need to have in order to succeed in any field of study that we have chosen. Without these two we would not be here, wouldn’t be writing right now and would be considered the lowest class of our society. There are different aspects of writing that each of us may, or may not, excel at. Some of us are creative enough to write short stories or even novels on fiction while others, like me, are better at writing essays. As long as I can remember reading hasn’t been my thing, in my four years of high school I've read no more than four books that I truly liked. I don’t remember being read to as a child but my mother says she read to me all the time. The only thing I really like about writing is persuasive essays, or maybe when I type, it is fun to try to type with my eyes closed. I feel like reading and writing are something I have avoided throughout my life. I am literate, I can read and write fine, literacy means to me "being able to read and write fluently".
Scientists have discovered that when people write in cursive it helps both sides of their brains communicate with each over. And yes, teacher may say that it’s complicated for kids and unnecessary.
