Women vs. society
Women around the globe in today’s society are still facing difficulties getting by. While some women have it easy, others cannot speak until spoken too. A woman has a mind to accomplish great things. Why should they be judged on their appearance whether they’re beautiful, or unattractive. “If you want something, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman” Margaret Thatcher, A life. Women are as strong as a man and in some cases even stronger. In the novels The Handmaid’s Tale by Margret Atwood and Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald, women are pushed around; they are being judge just because they are “women”. The Handmaid’s Tale describes women as serf, they are known as the handmaid’s. Their jobs are to reproduce for their commanders and their wives, after giving birth to one man; they're forced to give birth to another which becomes a role in their life. The Veil of Roses talks about women in Iran, women who are forced with religion in the Islamic Republic. Women are told what to do, how to dress, who to talk too and who to marry. They have no say in their own life. Although The Handmaid’s Tale and Veil of Roses are both novels of fiction, similar events are happening in our society. Both novels vividly highlight three important themes, escape, love, and freedom. Each theme informs us about women and their struggles, and how their daily lives are being affected. All of which are important for oppressed women.

Both novels The Handmaid’s Tale and Veil of Roses are comparable with the theme escape. In the novel The Handmaids Tale each handmaid wear’s red, the commander wives wear blue and the servants wear green, each colour identifies these women for who they are: this makes it hard to escape. ...they were waiting for their entire life: freedom. Although it may not have been easy for them considering their hostile situations, they both managed to overcome the hardships that society threw at them, achieving desirable freedom.
To sum things up, both novel the Handmaid’s Tale and Veil of Roses are comparable with similar themes escape, love and freedom. The Handmaid’s Tale and Veil of Roses both reminds us about how women were or may be treated in society. That comes to show, as empowering as women might feel in today’s society there are others who still pray and fight for their life every day. Women fight from love, violence, religion, or even marriage. It all comes down to a matter of struggle, which can be very pessimistic for each woman. “Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.”(244)
