Recommended: Brief history of windows operating system

In this assignment we as class were asked to look into the early windows with a focus starting with version 3.1 and workgroup for windows (WfW). I would like to start from the version 1.0 though I agree that in today’s terms version 1.0 would be considered an alpha release and 2.0 would be the beta though according to “Microsoft Windows History”, (2014) both were sold initially to the retail market at the price of $100 (the equivalent to $221.32, in value today) both versions introduced several features that had not been thought of due to the Command Line Interfaces (CLI) such as DOS and MS-DOS being used at the time until the Operating System appeared in late 1985 offering an easier Graphical User Interface (GUI) to users incorporating “windows” which gave the operating system its name (A history of Windows - Microsoft Windows,2013, p. 1982-1985).
Late May, 1990, Windows Version 3.0 was released to the public for $149.95 (277.13, in today’s value) it was introduced with the 386 PC that had Intel’s 386 processer which was supported by windows. Virtual memory support improved windows ability to used system resources which lead to better graphics. As stated in A history of Windows - Microsoft Windows (2013), “Windows now has better performance, advanced graphics with 16 colors, and improved icons”. This made it easier to use windows and became at the time for Personal Computers (PC) one of the most widely used GUI operating systems.
Windows 3.0 was used at both home and work settings continuing to grow in number of sales. Late June, 1998, Windows 98 was released specifically for public use (“A history of Windows – Microsoft Windows”, 2013, p.1998-2000). It included several enhancements such as FAT32, support, interface, improved PnP, USB support, DVD Support, customizable desktops, and protection.

As such, since access to information occurs mainly through digital means and media, the way information is arranged and presented on the screen is crucial. Because of this need for fast access and easy arrangement arose, in the early 1980s, companies started to work on various graphical user interfaces (or GUI for short). Most dictionaries define a GUI as ‘a way of arranging information on a computer screen that is easy to understand and use because it uses icons, menus and a mouse rather than only text.’ Introducing such software allowed a human-computer interaction on a visual plane, and took computing to an entirely new level of experience. The first GUI started to emerge, as stated above, in the early 1980s, and within the last 3 decades have completely dominated the way in which human-computer communication occurs. Although some sources argue about it, it is acknowledged that the first company to use a proper graphical user interface was Apple. In 1984 they released the Macintosh computer, which used a graphical system to present information on the screen using boxes and taskbars, and utilized a revolutionary pointer device, now widely known as the mouse. Following this event, other companies started releasing their versions of GUI based operating systems, until in 1995 Microsoft presented Windows 95, which soon became a dominant power on the market, and along with its later installments, led Microsoft to be the IT giant of the 20th century. Since its appearance, the GUI have greatly influenced the IT-centered society, and the role computing and digital devices play in its growth.
