In today’s world, religion plays a major role in almost every decision that we as mankind make. No longer are the days where religion is only spoken upon in church. It has become such a vital part of this world that it is almost frowned upon if you do not belong to one. Whether it is Islam, Christianity, Judaism, or even a satanic overview, religion is shaping our world and taking over its people. The most essential part of religion has to be Prayer. Prayer according to the World Wide Web is defined as a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to a God or an object of worship. Prayer allows us to cultivate commitment and bring upon indescribable powers. It is through faith and prayer that a person is able to forsake their body of unholy things and pursue a life of spiritual devotion. In every religion, there is a rule that a head of household should guide the members of their family to a path of faith. It is also said that a household must pursue privacy from the world from time to time in order to pray and build a stronger relationship with God. Doing this not only creates a bond that will never be broken, but it also allows the individual to become whole and have a heart and mind of peace. In this paper, I will define my view of prayer while also communicating how people view prayer and in what ways they do so. I will speak on behalf of the Islamic and Catholic faith in sharing ways to which they pray and who it is that they pray to. My outlook on prayer is simple; it is simply paying attention to God. Many people define prayer as having conversation with God; however, what happens if you are too young to understand what he is saying to you? Or if when you speak you feel that God does not hear you or you cann... ... middle of paper ... ...m all is called, “Salat.” Salat is the ritual of praying five times a day. No matter what you are doing, or where you are, at the designated times, you must stop and pray to God and thank him for all that he has done. If you happen to miss a prayer, you must make it up before the end of the day. The third rule known as “Sawm,” says that you must fast and use self-control during the holy month of Ramadan. Breaking the fast of Ramadan is considered to be one of the worst things you can do in the Islamic faith. It is highly frowned upon and must not be done for any reason. The fourth rule is “Zakat” which means you have to give 2.5% of what you make to the less fortune because God has blessed you so you must bless others. The final rule, known as “Hajj” says that before you die, if you are able, you must takea trip to Mecca as it is considered to be the “Holy Place.”
My father and mother would always instruct me how to pray by reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Every morning we would go in my parents’ bedroom, get on our knees and begin to pray. This devotional time was spent every morning as soon as we got out of bed. In fact, if we were asleep we were awakening to begin our daily devotion. I remember, my father would begin the prayer and each of us had to lead a portion of the ongoing prayer. My parents always instilled in me that prayer was the key to anything that I wanted to accomplish in life. However, after I prayed, I needed to believe that the work was already accomplished. Growing up in my environment, I could not understand as a child why they would wake me out of the bed in order for to come and pray. Today, I can honestly say I appreciate my parents for showing me the value of prayer. I can relate to the topic of the use of prayer because of a situation which transpired in my life approximately fifteen years ago. I have experienced the miraculous power and the value of prayer. My father was the manager and lead singer of a gospel group. The group would rehearse every Tuesday night with the singers and the musicians which consisted of approx ten members. On this particular Tuesday night after rehearsal, he complained of a slight headache. He didn’t think much more about the headache because he thought he just needed some rest after a long day at
Throughout the world, religion is a significant factor in the relationships people build and how people react to situations in the world. Each religion holds true to their beliefs of what is right and wrong. Some of these religions have more in common than others while some religions may not have anything in common. No two religions are exactly identical. For example, they may differ in their beliefs of a god or gods, they may disagree about how the world was created or they may simply interpret literature differently. Each of these religions is based around certain ideas and practiced by those who believe those ideas to be true. By comparing religions, we can identify what the people who practice that religion may find sacred and how they function in the world.
Some believe that prayer is what we do if we want God to intercede on our behalf, and other believe that pray is discipline of the faith that should be done in the community. Are the different views about pray just the different doctrines of the different denominations?
The main book that shows prayer in the Old Testament is the book of Psalms. On the other hand, another interesting place to see prayer used is in 1 Samuel 14:36 which states, “Then Saul said, “Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them until the morning light; let us not leave a man of them.” And they said, “Do whatever seems good to you.” But the priest said, “Let us draw near to God here.” This shows how Saul’s main priority was not prayer, which later lead to his death. He was then replaced by King David who is the author of the majority of the Psalms and always relied on God for
The Qur'an sets a clear path for Muslims to follow in their wish to submit to Allah. As well as submitting to Allah, Muslims must be prepared to observe the daily and yearly requirements known as the Five Pillars of Islam. The first pillar is Shahadah, a declaration of loyalty to God that translates to “I declare there is no God except God, and I declare that Muhammad is the messenger of God” . Adherents must say shahadah at least 17 times a day. The next pillar is called Salat, which means daily prayer and is completed by adherents at five regular times during the day. The third pillar is Zakaat, meaning ‘annual charity’. Zakaat requires adherents to sacrifice a share of their yearly savings for we...
Salat, as mentioned earlier, is the performance of prayer five times a day. The prayer, which includes full prostration, is performed facing Mecca. In the The Meaning of the Glorious Koran, (the earliest source of Islamic writing as dictated to Mohammed), it is written, “Whencesoever thou comest forth (for prayer, O Mohammed) turn thy face toward the Inviolable Place of Worship. Lo! it is the Truth from thy Lord. Allah is not unaware of what ye do (Surah 2:149).” Implicit directions for prayer also display the amount of emphasis on practice. Salat must be performed five times daily, at specific times of the day: early morning, noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and evening. Each Friday a congregational service is held at the mosque and every male is required to attend. Before prayer, four ritual aspects are required: ritual purification, proper covering of the body, proper intention, and facing Mecca, or qibla (1).
Religion is an organized collection of beliefs and cultural systems that entail the worship of a supernatural and metaphysical being. “Religion just like other belief systems, when held onto so much, can stop one from making significant progress in life”. Together with religion come traditions that provide the people with ways to tackle life’s complexities. A subscription to the school of thought of great scholars
In the heart of every religion, there is a way to express one's deepest thoughts and feelings--prayer. Prayer is something that most people due naturally. Whether it is in the morning before you start your day, before a meal, before you go to sleep, or when you just feel the need to express your feelings, prayer is always there. Religious faiths believe that this is central to human life. Even those who are not religious pray. Prayer affects the material universe. Prayer can be defined as an earnest request; a humble entreaty addressed to God, to a god, etc (Webster's). We are allowed to pray publicly anywhere, as long as we don't pray out loud. Yet we all live in a society that does not allow prayer inside public schools. Prayer is also not allowed in public institutions, but we can pray in private institutions, such as church. There is so much emphasis put on prayer in public school, despite the fact that prayer is actually substantial.
The five pillars of Islam are the foundation of the way Muslims live. The first pillar of Islam is the Shahadah, the Declaration of Faith. This says; ‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’. The second pillar is salah, which says that Muslims should prey five times a day. This applies to all Muslims, except Shi’is are permitted to combine the 5 prayers into 3 sessions. The third pillar is zakah, which means giving money to people who are poor or in need. The fourth pillar is sawm, which means fasting. Every year, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during hours of daylight. The fifth pillar is Hajj. This is the pilgrimage to Mekkah, which every Muslim tries to make at least once in their
Prayer is an intimate one on one conversation with the almighty, wonderful God that you are having a relationship with. It is a special time and you are going before God who is above all.
We need to look at prayer with deeper thoughts. Prayer isn’t just closing your eyes, folding your hands and speaking. Prayer is a much more meaningful part of religion. We all need to pray, God himself demands us to pray. Prayer is defined as an act of God, a god or another object of worship, such as in devotion, confession, praise, or thanksgiving. When most people pray, they just say the same prayer, like the Lord’s prayer for example. Saying the same prayer isn’t really such a bad thing, its more about the meaning and the time that you spend praying. Prayer shouldn’t just be looked at as a routine or habit, but as more of a love poem to express ones self to God. Questions such as: why do we need to pray? What is this prayer?, and What does God command us to pray for? Are what we should be asking ourselves before we come to God in prayer.
The Islamic religion has a powerful meaning - surrender. Muslims in their religion pray to Prophet Muhammad who is regarded as the greatest of all prophets. Salat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is the greatest source for purification of the soul. If a man is not reciting Salat must be considered as soulless man. The way the Salat is offered and the words which are recited explain the true nature of religion.
Prayer is important because it allows us to have an intimate conversation with the Lord, as well as a relationship. It helps build our relationship with Him and makes it only even more powerful each time. Also, by praying, we are allowing and putting all of our faith into God's hands and letting him take the wheel and be in control of our lives and guiding us into making smart choices and decisions.
Each Muslim above the age of puberty is commanded to pray five times a day. Muslims pray five times a day facing the Qibla which means facing Makkah the house of Allah.
