I grew up on the corner of Ocean Ave. and Dorchester Ave., where all the older kids sat by the stoop that provide a gust of breeze during the summer. As the little ones on the block cool off form the open fire hydrant. Brooklyn, New York, Flatbush to be specific is the topic of the composition. Flatbush is a place where people pray to God so long that they soon become an Atheist. It’s a place where you can be with your friend one day and tomorrow he is dead. And the A-Team comes by, excuse me the cops, we call them that because they come out of vans and begin shooting with no regard. They may seem odd to many, but to me this is a typical and natural condition.
Death is so normal, young men think about writing wills at eight-teen. In my apartment building, I walk through broken glass in the hallway and bloodstained floors. When I come from the corner store neighbors, look at every bag you bring through your doors. Once I come through my door I lock the top lock, my mother would love have cuffed me to the radiator so I wouldn’t go out. Just imagine and try to envision these sentences as the depict various scenarios that go on as you read this essay. These events probably won’t make it to your evening news, but stories as such affect people in a lesser or same magnitude that the victims of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and crashed airplane accidents.

Tragedies that touches thousands but the media feels it really isn’t that important. Let me clarify that this doesn’t only go on Flatbush, Brooklyn, N.Y., rather this goes on practically everywhere in our great nation. From the hot and humid streets of Miami to the cold hostile settings in Chicago, the same cycles reenacts itself in different regions.
It’s not important to broadcast every single “bad” occurrence, but it is imperative to realize such events are going on and not just be blind about it. If a tall and towering tree falls down and no one is there, does the tree make a loud and terrible noise.

As the four men approach the residence of Anthony and his mother Ronnie, one of the vehicle’s passengers bellows out the phrase, “Yo, what’s up now partner,” and immediately begins to discharge massive gunfire from his Beretta 92F (MIIS). An immense array of blasts erupts at the residence.
While reading Amazing Grace, one is unable to escape the seemingly endless tales of hardship and pain. The setting behind this gripping story is the South Bronx of New York City, with the main focus on the Mott Haven housing project and its surrounding neighborhood. Here black and Hispanic families try to cope with the disparity that surrounds them. Mott Haven is a place where children must place in the hallways of the building, because playing outside is to much of a risk. The building is filled with rats and cockroaches in the summer, and lacks heat and decent water in the winter. This picture of the "ghetto" is not one of hope, but one of fear. Even the hospitals servicing the neighborhoods are dirty and lack the staff that is needed for quality basic care. If clean bed sheets are needed the patients must put them on themselves. This book is filled with stories of real people and their struggles. Each story, though different in content, has the same basic point, survival.
The funeral was supposed to be a family affair. She had not wanted to invite so many people, most of them strangers to her, to be there at the moment she said goodbye. Yet, she was not the only person who had a right to his last moments above the earth, it seemed. Everyone, from the family who knew nothing of the anguish he had suffered in his last years, to the colleagues who saw him every day but hadn’t actually seen him, to the long-lost friends and passing acquaintances who were surprised to find that he was married, let alone dead, wanted to have a last chance to gaze upon him in his open coffin and say goodbye.
When death has taken someone from your life, you think of everything you said to them, your last words, memories, and the talks that happened. During this assignment, one will see the grieving process from me about a tenant that I took care of, and the impact this lady’s passing away, left me. When my tenant was passing away it was painful. I didn’t know what to feel when I seen what was happening and knew what was taking place.

In the story “American History”, by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the setting takes place on a cold gray November day in Paterson, New Jersey as described by the narrator. The narrator is a 14 year old 9th grader named Elena who is Puerto Rican. Elena lives in a melting pot tenement called, “El Building”. Music is constantly playing in this building and joy is always trying to be spread. Elena goes to Public School 13 and she highly dislikes the environment in her school. On the day John F. Kennedy was shot, her city changed in an interesting way.
Drugs, violence, prostitution, pollution, infestation, and sickness of all kinds are present in South Bronx, New York. Unfortunately, children are surrounded and involved in all these problems and more. In Jonathan Kozol’s novel Amazing Grace, an evil reality full of racial segregation and alienation affect the people living in the ghetto. The personalities of these children are changed forever due to the existence of discrimination.
It’s hard to leave a loved one in a hospital bed when night falls. Family members leave with a sense of responsibility, guilt, and sadness. They leave relying on the nurse to watch and care for their sick family member. Therefore, it is heart breaking to find out the next morning your loved one has suffered great brain damage due to nurses failing to check on alarm sounds. Now, the family is put on the spot to continue life support or disconnect their family member. One can only imagine what went wrong; up to the minute that you left the hospital, your loved one was doing fine. You are relying on the health care providers to take care of your loved one, just as you would, while you are gone. Staff made an error by ignoring the alarms sounds, warning them that the patient was deteriorating, and costing the patient’s family a great deal of pain. Jenifer Garcia’s life shattered when this exact event happened to her husband in July, 2010 (Kowalczyk, 2011). She left her husband Friday night, alive, and returned the next morning to find out he was brain dead. Advancements in technology are used to decrease and catch medical errors made by health care providers that can harm or kill patients, but alarm fatigue has proven that even technology cannot fully protect a patient from nursing errors, thus taking the lives of patients.
The theme death has always played a crucial role in literature. Death surrounds us and our everyday life, something that we must adapt and accept. Whether it's on television or newspaper, you'll probably hear about the death of an individual or even a group. Most people have their own ideas and attitude towards it, but many consider this to be a tragic event due to many reasons. For those who suffered greatly from despair, living their life miserably and hopelessly, it could actually be a relief to them. Death affects not only you, but also those around you, while some people may stay unaffected depending on how they perceive it.
Modern psychology describes five stages of grief that people go through when confronted with tragic circumstances. The five stages are denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. This system was devised by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross and David Kessler in their collaborations on death, dying and grieving. The fact that these stages are experienced by so many shows that grief is a universal process. The term universal means that people anywhere in the world and at any time in history share the same feelings and psychological experiences. Though people experience loss in unique ways, they experience the grieving process in the same way, and the five stages are a universal process in coping with the loss. Oskar Schell, the nine year old protagonist of Jonathan Safran Foer’s “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” is the central figure in an exploration of the stages of grief. After Oskar’s father Thomas is killed in the World Trade Centre attacks on September 11th, 2001, the boy goes on a transformative journey through New York City, searching for clues to a lock, as well as searching for a way to make a better world reborn out of horror. Certain parts of the novel’s plot, as well as certain characters, are representative of the five stages of grief, and we will see that Oskar makes the necessary and universal trip through the grieving process and comes out at the end a more understanding and healing person.
After reading or watching horror, the emotion produced from this action is similar to that of someone who just finished watching a documentary on absurdly lazy adults, thinking “at least I’m not like them,” and by doing so, we re-establish our normality in our behaviors or positions. “Strawberry Springs,” another piece of work from King, does an exceptional job in fulfilling this reason for craving horror. The short story depicts the mystery of serial murders of college students on their campus, all in the perspective of Springheel Jack. Springheel Jack was a normal student like the most of us, and we all relate to him in many other ways. What re-establishes our normality is that, hopefully, we don’t go around killing our classmates like he did. Furthermore, he was not even aware of the shadow that followed him, as he had forgotten of his whereabouts the night before, pleading that he was “with another woman,”(King, “Strawberry Spring” 5) as his wife suspected he was, rather than have killed someone, even if both situations would end in a divorce. By reading “Strawberry Springs” one may feel a sense of relief that they’re not dead, that they don’t live on a campus with a serial killer on the loose, or especially, that they are not unknowingly killing their classmates-- and all of this leads up to the fact that “no matter
The people in this community would care less if someone died right in front of them. For example, when the babies were little they used to give them shocks if they were from the low class. They gave shocks to the little babies who were playing in the rose so that for the rest of their lives, they would be scared of something like that. “They’ll grow up with what psychologists used to.safe from books and botany all their lives.” (22)....
Upon arrival into the jungle of vast buildings, the first thing noticed is the mobbed streets filled with taxi cabs and cars going to and fro in numerous directions, with the scent of exhaust surfing through the air. As you progress deeper into the inner city and exit your vehicle, the aroma of the many restaurants passes through your nostrils and gives you a craving for a ?NY Hot Dog? sold by the street venders on the corner calling out your name. As you continue your journey you are passed by the ongoing flow of pedestrians talking on their cell phones and drinking a Starbucks while enjoying the city. The constant commotion of conversing voices rage up and down the streets as someone calls for a fast taxi. A mixed sound of various music styles all band together to form one wild tune.
