There are four elements that I will discuss while writing this paper. These four elements will describe the hero’s plot. The two movies that I will apply these elements to are Unforgiven and Being There.
The first element that I will discuss is origin. Origin is the starting point of the movie. It is who the character is at the time you meet him. In the movie Unforgiven, the main character is a man named William Munny. When we first see William Munny, he is on a small farm with his two children. He is not very wealthy and is working in the pigpen. His wife had died a couple of years ago and he is left to take care of a farm and his two children. In the movie Being There, the main character is a man named Chance the Gardner. When the audience first meets Chance, he is sitting on his bed watching television. Chance is a mentally challenged man. A black maid named Louise comes in and tells Chance that the old man has passed away. Louise is very upset and Chance does not show any kind of emotion. This is how both characters in the two movies are introduced to the audience.
The second element, which is important, is the back story. The back story is the unseen but understood theme behind the movie. It is the meaning of the movie in a whole. William Munny’s background is introduced at the beginning of the movie. They portray him as an assassin and a die-hard cowboy. He murdered women and children and was the most feared man in Wyoming. Since then he has changed his life. After getting married to his wife he quit drinking and killing and tried to better his life.
Chance the Gardner is described as being the caretaker of the garden. He lived with and old man who owns a very large estate. They suggest that he was taken into the house at a very young age. Being the gardener, this was the only life he knew.
The third element is development. Development is the changes and challenges that the character faces. One of the challenges that William Munny faces is when a young man comes to Munny’s farm and asks Munny to join him in killing two men that sliced a prostitutes face. He says that he will give Munny five hundred dollars if he helped him kill these two men.
This paper examines the argument and theory proposed by Richard H. Tyre of the six basic movements of a plot in a hero story. Although Tyre’s theory does seem too narrow focused, fixed and direct to fit with the plot structure of all hero stories, he makes a great point and provides adequate evidence to support his statement.
Tens of thousands of stories fit into the hero’s journey archetype created by Christopher Volger. Out of these, a large number of them are stories with remakes that share notable resemblances in their heroes’ journeys. However, none of these quite match those very strong similarities found between Homer’s The Odyssey and Joel Coens’s O Brother, Where Art Thou? These stories share crucial components of the hero’s journey whether it be “crossing the first threshold,” where the main characters of both stories begin their long adventure that transforms them into heroes; “the supreme ordeal,” where the main characters are both deprived of the opportunity to get home sooner; or “return with elixir,” where Odysseus and Ulysses both return to their homes alive the comfort of their wives. In their major plot points, the novel The Odyssey and the motion picture O Brother convey obvious similarities in key elements of their heroes’ journeys such as “crossing the first threshold,” “the supreme ordeal,” and “return with elixir.”
Faulkner's character Moseley is essential in facilitating both his intended atmosphere and style of the novel, while placing emphasis on religious themes. Because he is new to the Bundrens, he is able to take the reader out of their world and see matters realistically. Moseley also proves errors within the Bundren's character by providing rectitude yet to be seen in the novel. He is a man of the word and does not trade his morals for the fleeting pleasures of the world. Through the lifestyle of the Bundrens, Faulkner intended to illustrate the faults in society and through Moseley, provide an example of how to live.
Being one of the world’s most popular art forms, it was inevitable that these archetypes would find their way into film as well. In this essay I will argue that the films Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, Watership Down, and Trainspotting are all versions of The Hero’s Journey, consequently demonstrating just how prevalent these archetypes have become in modern cinema. And that mythology and storytelling are important parts of each culture because they prevent the darkness in our hearts from spreading.

When reading a novel or watching a movie, the audience often looks for a guiding light; a character that steps up to take the lead when all hope is lost. It is not uncommon for that beacon of hope to be a complete stereotype, all too often, the hero of the day is a strong, virile, ruggedly handsome man, but what if he was not? What if he was just an average man, or not even a man at all, but a woman or a child? When reading fiction, the imagination is allowed to run wild, painting vivid pictures interwoven with personal life experiences, relatable to the characters in the novels and to one’s own life experiences. The most memorable content of both The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks, leaves a lasting impression due to strong lead characters, their resolve to survive, no matter what obstacles may wind up in their paths, and the simple truth that they are human and flawed, but still resilient and willing to push forward as an example to others, both in the novel and in the target audience.

The author skillfully uses literary techniques to convey his purpose of giving life to a man on an extraordinary path that led to his eventual demise and truthfully telling the somber story of Christopher McCandless. Krakauer enhances the story by using irony to establish Chris’s unique personality. The author also uses Characterization the give details about Chris’s lifestyle and his choices that affect his journey. Another literary element Krakauer uses is theme. The many themes in the story attract a diverse audience. Krakauer’s telling is world famous for being the truest, and most heart-felt account of Christopher McCandless’s life. The use of literary techniques including irony, characterization and theme help convey the authors purpose and enhance Into The Wild.
Each element helps each other by making the next scene better than the one before. It has the storyline come to live, and having people thinking what can happen next or who has the power in the movie. By seeing this movie it can make someone feel complete and satisfied for a long time.

The film Being There allows us to observe the different ways people recognize what is to be expected and change their behaviors to adapt to what they are perceiving, or how symbolic interactionism works. In any new situation people observe what others are doing and what meanings their actions hold and can adjust to fit in. Chance does just that in this film as he is thrust into the business and political world.

“Entertainment has to come hand in hand with a little bit of medicine, some people go to the movies to be reminded that everything’s okay. I don’t make those kinds of movies. That, to me, is a lie. Everything’s not okay.” - David Fincher. David Fincher is the director that I am choosing to homage for a number of reasons. I personally find his movies to be some of the deepest, most well made, and beautiful films in recent memory. However it is Fincher’s take on story telling and filmmaking in general that causes me to admire his films so much. This quote exemplifies that, and is something that I whole-heartedly agree with. I am and have always been extremely opinionated and open about my views on the world and I believe that artists have a responsibility to do what they can with their art to help improve the culture that they are helping to create. In this paper I will try to outline exactly how Fincher creates the masterpieces that he does and what I can take from that and apply to my films.
