When he traveled to Paris, Winslow Homer studied the paintings and art form of artists such as Millet, Manet and Courbet. In 1875 Homer left his illustrating job and started to paint for himself but struggled financially. After living two years in an English fishing village in Northumberland, Homer moved back to the Maine coast of the United States in 1882 (Hodge 127). There he painted some of his more famous paintings such as “The Gulf Stream” and “The Life Line,” showing man-against-elements (Strickland 85). This is evident in one of his famous genre paintings currently on display in the St. Louis Art Museum titled The Country School. Homer was born in February 1836 and grew up outside of Boston. He gained an early interest in art from his mother. He gained an apprenticeship with an illustrator upon graduating from high school. He would work as a commercial illustrator for many popular publications including Harper’s Weekly.

He traveled to London and worked for a Silversmith. While there he saw many painters, he enjoyed it and began painting himself. It was impressive that he began painting without any formal academic lessons (Woodall 11). In spite of that his work was very astonishing and he published his first sketches in 1747. He was greatly influenced by the great painter Sir Anthony Van Dyck before he decided that it was time for him to leave the silversmith’s shop (Internet 2).
