The Future Outlook of American Children How many times do you find yourself telling your children “just sit here and watch television” “go play your games” while you get things done around the house? How many of you are guilty of buying: chips, pop, comfort cakes, cookies, and candy for snacking on throughout the day? Many Americans are guilty of taking advantage of the fast food service industry when it comes to dinner time and it shows by how well these processed food restaurants are doing. If you thought “yes I’m guilty” then you are most likely contributing to the Obesity problem here in America. Obesity is defined as a medical condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body and that in an adult is typically indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater. (MERRIAM-WEBSTER ONLINE DICTIONARY) People are considered obese when their body mass index (BMI), a measurement obtained by dividing a person’s weight by their height. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) There has been an outreach involving anybody who has the appearance of looking and/or being overweight, 17% of children aged 2 to 19 years of age are obese (Center for Disease Control and Prevention ). These are school children and teens within your own communities who are becoming the center focus on this waging war against obesity. You cannot continue to put the blame on your child for their weight issues take a long look at yourself. You are their immediate role model, their parent and the reason for them being/ becoming obese. It is a parent’s most immediate responsibility to see that your child is fed every day and what they consume. It’s all too easy to feed a family quickly by running through a fast food line, but h... ... middle of paper ... ...; it’s your sole responsibility as a parent to help educate your child to maintain a long healthy lifestyle. In this essay I gave you a few facts to explain to you how bad young children are suffering from obesity. I demonstrated why it’s the parents fault for their child being obese, because they have control over how much the child is allowed to play on video games or watch television. You have authority in controlling their activity levels for each day, and making sure they get so exercise activities in. A parent is also in charge of the intake of food and where it comes from so you are completely responsible if your child’s is obesity and teaching them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I touched base on the organization “Let’s Move” and was able to explain their outreach in schools better promoting and educating your children to get healthy and stay healthy.
