The approach and the plan for DR and Business Continuity are based upon the VMWare’s Site Recovery Management (SRM) implementation. After doing a market research, it was observed that by implementing VMWare’s SRM tool, the university can actually save almost 30% on the total cost. Another 21% can be saved if VMWare’s replication manager is implemented along with SRM. The following picture demonstrates the cost savings of the solution which I have proposed in this document against the manual recovery processes:
(VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5.5 Automated Disaster Recovery Orchestration, 2013).
VMWare’s Site Recovery implementation wass expected to reduce the cost of software required for replication. Cases where the RPO is ascertained to be more than 15 minutes, no additional cost was required for replication.
A saving of approximately $1,000 per virtual machine was expected as a result of implementing VMWare’s VCenter Site Recovery Manager.
Risk Analysis
The DR and Business continuity plan was required to mitigate the combat a disaster situation and to ensure that the business operation continues. Some of the potential risks that are listed below might have serious impact on the business operations:
1. System Capacity falling short (system unable to handle 1 million concurrent user logins and students cannot access the OpenWorld University website);
2. Operational Risks (The payment gateway integrated with OpenWorld University website fails);
3. The OpenWorld Website faces Security threats (denial of service attacks and student unable to access the website);
4. Unavailability of the human resources due to extreme weather condition. (Human Resource unavailability (both outsourced resource and internal resource)...

• Interdependency with various entities like banks, statutory bodies and other universities are very high as most of the operations and transactions are conducted through the Openworld University Website, hence the network communication and connectivity has to be present at all times. This spawns the requirement of the comprehensive disaster recovery plan business continuity solution.
• In today’s world, speed and timeliness is a key success factor of any business. Hence all the servers and other IT infrastructure should be in working condition (at the secondary site) in an event of a disaster so that the users do not face any problem while accessing the website.
• The comprehensive disaster recovery plan business continuity solution is required to meet the statutory requirements as well.
...includes data security and other information data related systems. It is for this reason where business continuity development plans today have standby battery powered-backups to supply power just in case the other sources are non-operational.
Disaster recovery saves data so that your organization is able to recover from a disaster. Why’ll business continuity is a completely different process it allows your organization to continue business during a disaster. In layman terms you can still access your organizations data with little to no downtime.
Disaster recovery is a useful feature of virtualization. Snapshots of your server can be taken regularly and as often as you prefer. Then, you can use any one of those snapshots to return your server to a particular configuration from a particular point in time. For example, before your network was infected by a virus.
The National response plan outlines four key actions the disaster coordinator should take. They are gaining and maintaining situational awareness, activate and deploy key resources and capabilities, coordinating response actions and demobilizing. Throughout the response it is essential that responders have access to critical information. During the initial response effort the situation is will change rapidly. Situational awareness starts at the incident site. For this reason it is essential that decision makers have access to the right information at the right time. By establishing an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) all key responders are brought ...
Through backup, relevant files are copied and through disaster recovery these files are made accessible to ensure continued business operations. Although these two components are separate, one needs the other in order to completely fulfil the goal of protecting a company from data loss....
Depending on the nature and scope of the disaster, hospitals require a reliable external support and supply line to effectively deal with emergency cases. The preparation can be hampered by a host of vulnerabilities, such as near capacity operation, deficient supply lines and external support and the growing need to reduce costs and focus of service
The well-developed emergency response plan established beforehand helped the Company in making quick decisions after the disaster. Foreseeing situations arising from a major disaster and preparing well for them enabled the Company to take prompt actions when the time came. Management of the Company was empowered to make decisions without any lengthy analysis from a central authority. The Company also used flexible approach by modifying its delegation of authority to speed up critical decision-making process for recovery concerns. One of these decisions includes launching the Global Disaster Control Headquarters after mere 15 minutes of the disaster. The team further, worked upon the situation effectively by assessing damage while overseeing restoration efforts at various facilities. Latest information including details about employees’ safety and damage caused was absorbed and appropriate actions based on this were taken. Hence, the Company used proactive measures post the disaster situations rather than consuming time and delaying decisions which were indispensable. This was possible only through preparing a backup recovery plan well before the disaster, integrating tasks and taking several imperative decisions
In this research, we will look at some of the obstructions to business continuous and disaster recovery planning, the reasons why spending time, money, and staff hours. The speed of the business has changed rapidly, and there is often little time to allow for recovery. The BCP/DRP (business continuity planning/disaster recovery planning) plan is the key to organizations for which 24/7 availability is critical.
A Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is planned to guarantee the continuation of important business processes in the event that a natural or man-made disaster occurs. A DRP will offer an effective system that can be used to recover all important business processes needed to maintain normal operations within an organization promptly. A DRP will allow any organization the ability to handle events surrounding any crisis that takes place.
The company experienced a natural disaster that resulted in six production facilities and about 50 of its critical suppliers being impaired on March 11, 2011 (Schmidt, 2013). What helped maintain their value and success, was being prepared for this tragic 9.0 earthquake a year prior to the tragic event (Schmidt, 2013). The company had implemented an earthquake emergency response plan. This was implemented, so they would be able to rebuild, resume and provide the service, which customers had grown to know, while maintaining their competitive edge. They took a bottom-up approach to implement the necessary changes, by getting two employees from each facility to discuss daily operation, processes, warehouse, inventory and address any operational concerns that were present or may arise from all stakeholders.(William Schmidt, 2013). This allowed them to get all the information they would need to make an emergency response plan that ensured their survival through collaboration.
Disaster recovery and business continuity planning are the processes that assist business in preparation for unexpected events. Business continuity and disaster recovery are closely related but are two different concepts. Business continuity planning (BCP) is a methodology used to create and validate plan for maintaining continuous business operations before, during, and after disasters and disruptive events (Snedaker, 2014). Disaster recovery is a part of the business continuity and deals with the immediate impact of an event (Snedaker, 2014). The misunderstanding of the two terms could result in a company being unprepared at an unexpected disaster due to inadequate knowledge and planning of the concepts.
Business continuity planning and Disaster recovery planning are terms companies sometimes use interchangeably. Although they can be considered related, they are not the same thing. The "Disaster Recovery Plan" deals more with the restoration of computer systems, software and connections to full functionality under a variety of damaging or interfering external conditions. Business Continuity is a more comprehensive ...
This case study is an analysis of the Chicago Tribunes Server consolidation in which the Chicago Tribune moved its critical applications from several mainframes and older Sun servers to new, dual-site data-center infrastructure based on Sun 15K servers. The Tribune clustered the Sun servers over a 2-mile distance, lighting up a dark-fiber, 1-Gbps link between two data centers. This configuration let the newspaper spread the processing load between the servers while improving redundancy and options for disaster recovery. (Baltzan and Philips, 2009 p 162)
In order to fully understand the concept of a contingency plan, there are a few aspects which need to be explored. We must first define what a contingency plan is, followed by an explanation of why contingency plans are so valuable. Furthermore, an analysis of the implementation of contingency plans should be performed. Lastly, a comparison of such plans from other industries should be done, in order to comprehend the differences in both purpose and criteria.
Hello friends, it's almost two months I haven't posted a single content as got a bit busy in my clients and on my niche sites. Today's post is about my personal experience what I faced even after I was having my Backup all I can say is a matter of luck. So we are not going to discuss how to take a backup of your site, it's just about how important is to have a backup so that you are ready for any disaster.
