I want to pursue a doctorate degree in industrial engineering specialized in ergonomics from a reputable university in the United States (US). During my doctoral study, I plan to conduct ergonomics researches concentrated on injury prevention resulted from the hand-operated device usage. I am interested in focusing in particular area because pertinent studies had provided evidences that various health problems apparently grow along with the rapid growth of hand-operated gadget usage. However, limited studies addressing to explain empirical evidence about the musculoskeletal risks that associated with the usage of the most recently developed gadgets. In addition, for enhancing my knowledge to support my researches I intend to take several ergonomics courses like occupational biomechanics and human motor behavior-engineering systems.

The field that I choose is relevant to my educational background, my working experience, and the needs of the university where I am currently working. Firstly, I chose ergonomics as my thesis topic on both of my undergraduate and master studies. For my undergraduate thesis, I developed a software for analyzing the biomechanical properties of human body during lifting and lowering tasks purposed for minimizing the musculoskeletal risks as the consequences of these activities. Then, on my master thesis, due to the great number of musculoskeletal disorders in human wrist, I investigated the effect of non-neutral postures on the wrist muscle activities. Moreover, I had the experience in working as an occupational health and safety (OHS) in a car manufacturer in Indonesia. During this period, I found that better understanding in employee OHS will create a reduction in the number of occupational accidents, i...

...cturer, I want to transfer my deeper understanding in ergonomics to my students and ask them for applying it so we can make many contributions to the society. Then, Indonesia faced a serious problem in the ergonomics standards like the wearable product sizing system and the lifting limit recommendation. The equations and standards that are used in Indonesia are still adopted from other countries. However, since race, ethnicity, age, sex, and occupation make the human characteristics seen from physiological and psychological properties between Indonesian and other people is different, other countries standards are not fully proper to be applied in Indonesia. According to this needs, as a doctorate degree in industrial engineering (ergonomics) holder, I want to conduct researches focused on developing Indonesian based ergonomics standards after returning to Indonesia.
