The Effects of Steroids
Former NFL player Lawrence Taylor once said: “Steroids are for guys who want to cheat opponents." Recently, many professional athletes have been caught abusing steroids in order to improve their performance in certain sports. While there are many different types of steroids, the one most commonly talked about and used by many of these athletes today are called Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids. Anabolic steroids are a synthetic drug that comes from and has the same effects as the male sex hormone, testosterone. It increases protein made within the cells which results in cellular tissue build up specifically in the muscles. Steroid use throughout the past has shown to have many negative effects on the body and has had a enormous impact in sports, especially in baseball.
There are many reasons given as to why people decide to take steroids. Despite all the negative effects it can have, some people actually need it as their doctors prescribe it to them due to health reasons. For instance, anabolic steroids can be prescribed to treat conditions resulting from not having enough testosterone in the body such as delayed growth and puberty. It can also be prescribed to treat conditions such as loss of muscle mass from diseases like cancer and AIDS.(DrugFacts: Anabolic Steroids) Unfortunately, there are also many people , especially athletes, who inject themselves with steroids illegally, without a prescription from a doctor, in order to enhance their performance in sports and in appearance by increasing their muscle mass. However, what many of these people don’t realize or just simply ignore is that there are many side effects to steroids and that the negatives heavily outweigh the positives.

Throughout its history, the abuse of anabolic steroids has proven to become a big problem in today’s world as it has many negative effect on the body and in sports. Even though it does make athletes stronger and does improve their performance, it comes at the hefty price tag of ruining their bodies and legacy as a player. Despite the ban of these substances in every major sport and all the drug testing that goes on, there are still many athletes who use steroids and and getting away with it. In order to solve this problem, there needs to be a way of better detecting whether or not these players are on steroids.
