The peaks and valleys of an ECG help us visualize the electrical activity of our heart. The waveforms reflect our heart health and by extension our quality of life. Like these waveforms, the waveforms in our lives also reflect the quality of our life. The ups and down of our experiences enrich our lives by providing unique learning experiences we can grow from. The perceptions of my experiences have and continue to shape my growth and development intellectually, emotionally and physically. Attending a prestigious university was a rewarding and challenging experience. I had the opportunity to learn from accomplished professors and attend inspiring lectures from prominent researchers. My degree allowed me the flexibility to combine my interest in biology with my curiosity about what comprises healthy individuals. I did encounter challenges during my university experience, whether it was dealing with a serious illness while taking classes or working full time while trying to improve my GPA, the end result was often a poor reflection of my capabilities. I took time off for i...
I endeavor to obtain excellence in my academics; I wish to exemplify scholarship by constantly asking the whys and hows of things. I will not let a bad grade define who I am as a student or who I will become. I also want to take the most challenging classes available, not because it will look good on my college application, but because I genuinely love the concept of learning and discovering new things. Education doesn’t end after high school, so I plan to attend university, eager to attain the knowledge to better understand my world: and expand it.
The study of cardio physiology was broken up into five distinct parts all centering on the cardiovascular system. The first lab was utilization of the electrocardiogram (ECG). This studied the electrical activities of the heart by placing electrodes on different parts of the skin. This results in a graph on calibrated paper of these activities. These graphs are useful in the diagnosis of heart disease and heart abnormalities. Alongside natural heart abnormalities are those induced by chemical substances. The electrocardiogram is useful in showing how these chemicals adjust the electrical impulses that it induces.
There are a lot of reasons why I chose to pursue pharmacy as my career and they all point to the most important reason: pharmacy is a great fit for my life and is something I have become increasingly passionate about. It started when I was researching careers with my parents and my dad suggested pharmacy and, simply put, it sparked my interest because at the time it was one of the few things I thought I would not hate doing. A healthcare career has always been where I put myself in the future, mainly because most of my family members are in the healthcare field. However, I have never been one that could directly help the wounded or deal with anything gory, but am very intrigued by the growing science of pharmacy. As I continue exploring pharmacy, the more I enjoy learning about it and feel like I could excel in this career.
The ECG has had a huge impact on society in many ways. Among the most beneficial is that the data collected can be extrapolated to predict heart disease in an individual and thus lead the individual to alter their lifestyle, whether by taking medication or changing diet and exercise routine (3). This is increasingly relevant with the rising number of healthy, young athletes dying from sudden cardiac arrest after showing no previous symptoms (5). With the data collected by the electrocardiogram, this can be predicted and thus save lives. One harmful effect of the ECG is that the data is not always reliable; sometimes the data will find false-positive evidence of heart disease or a heart attack when there is none, and in other cases, the device isn’t consistently able to predict heart disease in people without a high risk of having heart problems (1). Overall, however the ECG is a device that ultimately will benefit people and reduce the number of lives taken by heart
From a very young age, I was taught the value and importance of education. My parents would tell me stories about their challenges finding jobs because they were uneducated. From seeing my parents struggle, I made a promise to myself to further my education at a post secondary institution. Although everyone in the United States has the right to free primary education, the value is often overlooked. Education is the only way to change the world. With my future goals of being a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, I have to obtain a higher education in order to successfully care for other individuals. I have devoted my time and energy to academic excellence for a very long time. As a result, I have gained various academic achievements.
Being accepted into the four year, signature Honors Magnet Global Ecology Program was quite an accomplishment. I thought my strengths in both math and science would help carry me through this rigorous academic curriculum. I was wrong! I hit a brick wall and I hit it hard. Having a parent who was a special educator and dyslexic as well kept me afloat; however, I needed to use the resources available both inside and outside of the school to begin my journey to academic success. It took me until my junior year of high school to understand just how and what I needed to do to be all I could. I learned this the hard way on my own; it cost me admission in to the National Honor Society, being recommended to AP Biology and AP US History. I needed to begin to take charge of my life and set the goals necessary to get back on my feet. I needed to prove to myself that wanting to go on to a pre-med major in college was a possible dream.
After graduation, I took a hiatus from education to re-evaluate my goals and interests. Although I thoroughly evaluated my competence and desire to attend medical school, I thought it necessary to take another year to do so; given the importance of such a decision. During which, I continued to explore my enthusiasm for medicine through shadowing and clinical volunteering opportunities. In the process, reinforcing my already present inclinations to become a physician. Furthermore, I rigorously studied for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) as it is a critical part in the admissions process.
Since the beginning of my academic endeavors, I have long cherished a dream to be a member of the social science research community, which gives our society progressive insights into human ecology. I began my undergraduate studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey with a passion for ecological justice and with the intention of majoring in environmental studies. Ramapo College’s progressive liberal arts foundation provided me with ample room to explore the multifarious array of social science courses. As I took more social science courses, however, my understanding of human social groups underwent a metamorphosis. As a result, I decided to pursue a degree in Social Science, with minors in the two fields I felt most passionately interested in, Women’s Studies and African American Studies.
Attending the University of Rochester was like because dropped into the middle of the wilderness with only a calculator and a laptop for defense. I was the first person, not only in my family, but in my neighborhood to attend college; I had no one to refer to for help. I figured that since I liked to help people and I did well in science classes, I decided to become a doctor. But I think the re...
Entering my freshman year, I did not take any honors courses that my high school offered, which made me realize that I need to work hard and maintain high grades in my classes. As a result of my past year of tedious efforts, my sophomore year I was selected into Bayonne High School's outstanding “Academy and Fine Arts”. As I excelled through my academic career through the Academy, I was put through the painstaking task of maintaining high grades within rigorous courses. However, my hard work and accomplishments did not conclude with this, I was recently accepted into The National Honors Society, Rho Kappa Omega Society, World Language Honors Society, and English Honors Society. Not only did I excess academically, but I also had many research accomplishments. For example, I conducted a bacterial growth research project where I observed the effects of natural-occurring compounds on the growth rate of “Streptococcus pneumoniae” as a means of determining which compound will be most beneficial for
As a new student at UNCW, my overall experience and my ultimate personal and professional goals are entirely dependent on my actions and what I participate in during my four years at this institution. I must apply my past values, experiences, and influences during my time here to be the most well-rounded student I can be. Although the past is a crucial component of my identity and where I am headed, it is equally important to create new experiences that build upon existing foundations from earlier in life. My inherent values and experiences make me a well-rounded individual, and it is up to me to draw upon this as I create my legacy at UNCW.
As a young undergraduate, I attempted to prove myself as a hardworking student by attending my courses focused and well prepared, and conducting my assignments as required. Through my undergraduate studies, I was fortunate to participate in several student and voluntary activities. Furthermore, determinant to acquire relevant practical experience, I trained and worked at several establishments applying my theoretical ed...
This reflection of vital signs will go into discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of each vital sign and the importance of each of them. Vital signs should be assessed many different times such as on admission to a health care facility, before and after something substantial has happened to the patient such as surgery and so forth (ref inter). I learned to assess blood pressure (BP), pulse (P), temperature (T) and respiration (R) and I will reflect and discuss which aspects were more difficult and ways to improve on them. While pulse, respiration and temperature were fairly easy to become skilled at, it was blood pressure which was a bit more difficult to understand.
Rather than continuing to take the opportunities presented to me for granted, I will strive to use these chances to make a difference in the lives’ of others. As Admiral McRaven said, “Generations were saved by one decision, by one person.” The presence of one person and their decisions can easily change the lives of dozens of people if that person allows themselves to invest in the lives’ of those around them. As a member of the Embry-Riddle Prescott Honors Program, I am held to and hold myself to a higher standard. By making the most of my time at Embry-Riddle, I can not only change my own future, but also influence the decisions others make. I will use my time at Embry-Riddle to change not only my own life, but those of my peers through listening to the advice of Admiral McRaven, and using my decisions to change the world around me, rather than taking for granted the opportunity to positively impact another
My experience as a student throughout all years of school has been filled with so many positives that the negatives are not even worth talking about. I have learned numerous things that will help me in life and I feel confident that I am prepared for whatever impediment I may confront in future. On the off chance that I hadn’t joined Academy of Health Careers, I truly wouldn’t be the individual I am today and I would have no involvement in the medical field. These experiences as an student has characterized, molded my character, and helped me to develop into a youthful honorable man that I am
