Prisoner Culture

1A) As I watched the movie Shawshank Redemption I couldn’t help but notice the many subcultures within the Shawshank prison, such as prison culture, prisoner culture and even prison guard culture. The one that stood out the most to write this paper on was prisoner subculture. The movie did a great job portraying prisoner subculture in a realistic way and was full of examples of concepts I learned from class such as, socialization, symbols, sanctions, culture shock, and norms throughout the movie.
2A) The prisoners make up the subculture in the movie because their conduct and norms are different than what the rest of society sees as being accurate. For example, in the outside world most people separate themselves from felons because society knows that the person’s behavior or actions placed them into prison and society frowns upon breaking the rules. ...A politician's word, so young fellas like yourself can wear a suit and a tie, and have a job…” this showed how we like to think throwing people into prison is “fixing” the person and once they serve their long sentence magically they will rejoin as a normal fixed before when in reality we don’t do anything to help them. Even once prisoners are released they are not treated “normal”. We make people do time to make up for the crime they committed but yet once they finish the punishment we still look down upon felons and they are having trouble finding jobs because of their past so this future complicates and reinforces them returning into prison or jail. I think Shawshank Redemption did an amazing job showing prison culture even if it was all directly shown but in subtle symbols it really added a lot to the movie and our perspective on inmates and prisoner subculture.
