In Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, there are many different characters that have varying socio-economic standings. The positions in which they stand allow Fitzgerald to show a fundamental gap. This gap is shown between Myrtle and Gatsby. Fitzgerald uses status to separate and join the gap between Myrtle Wilson and Jay Gatsby by showing how they live, their desire, and their usage of words.
The parts of Myrtle and Gatsby’s lives that are absorbed with sunlight show the wonders for their lovers. Gatsby lives in a large white mansion, which catches all of the sun’s light, however there is Myrtle who lives in a tiny room above her husband’s garage. The house in which Myrtle lives in is not very beautiful in any way considering that the place that they live in is the valley of ashes. However Gatsby’s house everything is polished, clean, and vibrant with new life, and interesting individuals. Instead of Myrtle’s house catching the sun she does, “Then I heard footsteps on a stairs, and in a moment the thickish figure of a woman blocked out the light from the office door,” (Fitzgerald pg. 25)...
