Not only are their moral considerations that need to be made in this scenario, but ethical ones as well. The American Counseling Association or ACA has developed a code of ethics to assist professionals in identifying ethical and unethical behavior. This code of ethics is a guide that any and all counselors in American can turn to when needed. After careful review of this code some infractions may be present in this scenario. The first possible infraction falls under section A.4. Avoiding Harm and Imposing Values and subsection A.4.b Personal Values. This section states, “Counselors are aware of their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors and avoiding imposing values that are inconsistent with counseling goals. Counselors respect the diversity of clients, trainees, and research participants (American Counseling Association , 2005).” This indicates that if a counselor is knowingly or unknowingly unaware of their values or behaviors and in turn impose values that are inconsistent with the client’s that harm may come to the client. For example, making inappropriate comments or stating that the client’s sexual preference is wrong, immoral, etc. would be causing harm to that client and is unethical.
A second possible infraction can be found under section C.2 Professional Competence within subsection C.2.a Boundaries of Competence. This section states, “Counselors practice only within the boundaries of their competence, based on their education, training, supervised experience, state, and national professional credentials, and appropriate professional experience. Counselors gain knowledge, personal awareness, sensitivity, and skills pertinent to working with a diverse client population (American Counseling Association , 2005).” ...

The ACA code of ethics was used to illustrate that imposing values that are inconsistent with counseling goals, boundaries of competence, and nondiscrimination are all possible infractions. The topic of disclosure was considered are part of both one’s moral and ethical obligation in the event that a transfer is needed. Finally a consideration for future clashes between counselor and client were highlighted. These considerations included being able to identify cases in which my values would clash with the client’s values, obtaining a more inclusive knowledge of referral sources, the benefits of staffing this case with peers and my supervisor when appropriate so that I may gain as well as share insight, and lastly obtaining a richer understanding of my personal and professional limits.
