Introduction: The first part of this report will be looking at differentiating parts of the nervous system. Second part will look at different types of neurone and the functions of these neurones. Thirdly the nerve reflex pathway will be describe and illustrated. Lastly process of the nerve impulses and transmission will be explained.

Nervous system: The nervous system helps the body to coordinate involuntary and voluntary actions. The system also helps to transmit signals between parts of the body, for example if a person was to pick up an object the brain send signals down the nerves to enable grip and strength to pick the object up. There is much more to this action which will be discussed further on in this report. The nervous system also has a complex network of specialised cells which have specific functions. The cells throughout the nervous system communicate through electrochemical waves.
There are two major division in the nervous system they are the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Whilst the CNS involves the brain where information is received and processes sensory information. The CNS initiates the responses, stores memories, generates thoughts and emotions. The CNS also involves the spinal cord, which conducts signals to and from the brain and also controls reflex activates. For example if a hand is place on something hot the CNS ensures the hand is moved away from the danger so damage is limited. This reflex occurs without any thought from the person. Whilst the PNS main function is to connect the limbs and organs to the CNS. The PNS is split into two divisions, somatic and autonomic. The somatic system controls voluntary muscle movement, such as flexing the arm. Whilst the autonom...

...f the autonomic nervous system, which included the sympathetic and parasympathetic system. The next part of the report looked at the three major types of nerve cell unipolar, multipolar and bipolar cells. Part of neuron known as the myelin sheath was discussed and how it affects a person if the myelin sheath is damaged. The report looked at specific disease known as multiple sclerosis and the affects that this disease has on sufferers. The next part investigated the reflex pathway and how it’s essential in protecting the body. The pathway was describe by using the knee jerk technique and the pathway it takes with the neurons involved in that pathway. The last part of the report looked at the synapse and how it transmits signals to other neurons. During this neurotransmitters were discussed and also how local anaesthetic blocks pain when tooth extraction is involved.
