The Characters in Chapter One “Owl Post” of “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” by J.K.Rowling
In class, we listened to the first chapter of “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. This is indeed an extremely interesting chapter since it contains all the basic information you have to get to understand the “Potter Universe”.
It gives quite detailed information about most of the important characters.
The chapter starts with very important information about Harry. It says:” Harry Potter was a highly unusual boy in many ways. […] And he also happened to be a wizard.”
As the story unfolds, you get to know Harry as a boy of thirteen years with untidy jet black hair who is quite small and skinny for his age. His eyes are bright green and he wears round glasses. The most important feature, though, in the description of his appearance is the scar on his forehead, shaped like a bolt of lightning.
The book explains that Harry got the scar when his parents, James and Lily Potter, wizard and witch themselves, were murdered by the dark wizard Voldemort, the most vicious of his kind for a hundred years.
This explains why Harry has to live with his only living relatives, whom he obviously dislikes.
It is also made clear that Harry only spends the summer with his relatives to go back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the rest of the year, which he has attended for the last two years.
His relatives are his uncle Vernon Dursley, aunt Petunia Dursley and his cousin Dudley Dursley. They are non-magic folk, so-called Muggles, and they are extremely scared of anything that has to do with magic. This shows when Harry’s uncle roars at one of his wizard friends on the phone:” DON’T YOU COME NEAR MY FAMILY!”.
To the Dursleys it is very important to make a good impression on their neighbours and so they are terrified of anyone finding out that Harry is a wizard and goes to Hogwarts.
They think that magic people belong to some kind of a lower class, which shows clearly when Uncle Vernon screams at Harry:” HOW DARE YOU GIVE THIS NUMBER TO PEOPLE LIKE- PEOPLE LIKE YOU!” Magic people seem to be dirty and worthless and even dangerous in his eyes.
Three of the magicians closest to Harry are characterized in chapter one in detail.
First, there is Ron Weasley, one of Harry’s best friends at Hogwarts.
In the beginning Harry is being picked up by Mrs. Connin and it immediately becomes obvious that his parents lives revolve around partying. After Henrys father does a terrible job of dressing him because he’s still half asleep from partying the night before Mrs. Connin says “I couldn’t smell
He received the scar the night that Voldemort killed his parents and attempted to kill Harry. However, Harry was protected with his mother’s love so the killing curse rebounded off of him and to Voldemort. Harry’s scar indicates the fact that Voldemort made his mark on him and never left him. A part of Voldemort lives within Harry. Harry survived a killing curse and walked out with just a scar. That scar is a constant reminder of the man who killed his parents and changed his life forever. Harry’s scar is a constant reminder of the burden he must carry throughout his young life. Harry is the only one who can defeat the greatest evil because that evil lives within him. His lightning bolt scar indicates that he is the chosen
When Harry's friends here about him being expelled they are speechless. Hermoine just can't understand why he might be expelled when he saved Dudley. She is aghast. Ron is stupefied.
Later on he went to learn the truth about this parents and the background of the scar. When he enters the wizard world, everybody notices his scar. He becomes insecure about his scar and tries to hide it, along with his famous identity. Harry Potter's lightning shaped scar separates him from all of the magicians in the wizard world, it symbolizes power and authority. He is the chosen one out of all the wizards. This made his an immediate target for most of the other skeptical characters in the literary work. Also in order for Harry to do what he was intended to he had to learn and understand his importance in the wizard world, long with the narrative. Blemishes like scars on a character, can create a divergence that the character has to come to an understanding
Harry, named at birth as Erich Weisz, had an unsettled childhood. He was born to a father who was a Jewish Rabbi and was one of seven children. At the age of four, he moved with his family to the United States of America, where he the family changed its surname to Weiss. At first, they lived in Appleton, Wisconsin, but then moved to New York City when he was at the age of 13. He took on a lot of odd, magic-related jobs while calling himself “Ehrich, the Prince of the Air”. He began to get interested in trapeze arts and performed in many small places like museums and side-shows.
Joseph Campbell’s Hero With A Thousand Faces, as summarized by Christopher Vogler, states, “A Hero often refuses [or is reluctant] to take on the Journey because of fears and insecurities that have surfaced from the Call to Adventure. The Hero may not be willing to make changes, preferring the safe haven of the Ordinary World.” (Vogler). In the case of Harry, he wanted to know about the letter, but his uncle Vernon refused it because the Dursley family did not want to see Harry happy. The Dursley family went as far as moving to an island in middle of nowhere so they wouldn’t be bothered by any mail. It is on this island where Harry is surprised on his
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is the third book in the trilogy of J. K. Rowlings other Harry Potter books, though she is coming out with four more books in the coming years. Just to quickly run through the two previous books, Harry Potter is a wizard, who’s parents were killed by the worst dark wizard ever known. The reason why Harry Potter is still around, is because Lord Voldemort failed to kill Harry. His spell hit Harry, but then backfired on Voldemort, taking all of his powers with him. Harry is so famous for two things.
Harry had an issue at home with his parents who did not do what a real parent would do, not experiencing the outside world, having parents who come home late and does not take care of their son. Although my personal life is not exactly the same as his, I can connect to it. My parents are not party members but they
In his own eyes, Harry is a poor nobody. He is young, modest, and innocent, living a sheltered life and naïve to the immensity of the world. The truth is that Harry is a victim to elements of another world. For instance, the dark Lord Voldemort, an evil wizard, attempts to kill Harry and ends up destroying his family, leaving him with his cruel relatives. Otherwise unharmed, Harry is left with his lightening bolt scar on his forehead representing his terrible past, marking his fame, and symbolizing his destiny. Even though Harry leads a boring, ordinary life on Privet Drive with “the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious” (1), Harry’s scar hints at something more than ordinary,
For example, Harry’s relationship with the Dursleys is full of hatred. They hate who he is, and Harry hates how they treat him. Harry also is afraid of them thinking that they are going to kick him out. The Dursleys had Harry stay in the little cupboard under the staircase because they were not kind enough to provide him with an actual room, even though they had a couple extra guest bedrooms. As the series goes on Harry becomes able to defend himself against the Dursleys, especially Uncle Vernon. For example, when Harry needed Uncle Vernon to sign something for Hogwarts, Uncle Vernon was threatening him that if he was not a respectful young boy to the guests coming that he wouldn’t sign the papers. Harry stood up for himself and said, “It’s a lot to remember. I’ll have to make it sound convincing won’t I? What if I accidentally let something slip?” Which means he needed a promise that the paper was going to get signed or he would not act respectful
...ck and a potential pitfall. Someone full of hate and greed, such as Tom Marvolo Riddle, who has never known it even once in their entire life, cannot understand its full magical power. Love is one of the hardest and strongest kinds of magic and is perhaps the fabric that holds the wizarding world of Harry Potter together. Dumbledore says to Harry “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love” (Harry Potter and the Deathly Halllows 722). The series stresses that it is important to love. It is obvious throughout the series that Harry embraces his history and duty by accepting the soul-purifying act of practicing self-sacrificial love. It is no surprise that the Harry Potter series is so widely in a time of fear, uncertainty, and unrest. Harry defeats evil not by fearing it, but by embracing it and overcoming it with love.
Harry Potter starts off slow, but gets very interesting near the end. In the beginning, you meet the Dursleys, Harry’s aunt, uncle, and their son Dudley. Then you learn that Harry’s parents were witches, and that they were destroyed by a evil wizard. A good witch, Albus Dumbeldoor, sends Harry to the Dursleys, because they’re his only remaining family. The Dursleys however, hated Harry and his family, so Harry was mistreated for years. He was forced to live in a cuborrod under the stairs. He had to watch as the fat, stuck up Dudley got whatever he wanted, and then usually broke whatever it was he got. Then one day Harry got a letter.
Harry and Malfoy come from families with bug reputations. Harry's father was a star Quidditch player, and mother was a star student. Draco's father is a known and feared Ministry of Magic worker and death eater, while his mother comes from the famous Black family. Even though they are in different houses they are both well respected and looked up to as strong leaders. Slytherins use their name, connections, and money to their advantage, while Gryffindors would rather succeed on their own (Blair). Also, they are on their house quidditch team as seakers. Though they may be rivals Harry and Draco save each other. When snatchers find Harry, Ron, and Hermione they are brought to Draco to be identified. Draco knows that it is Harry, but does not say so. When the room of requirement was on fire Harry saved Draco from the flames. This shows despite their differences they still care about one another. Both have a connection and mark from Lord Voldemort. When Harry first defeated Lord Voldemort a part of him went into to Harry and created a lighting bolt shaped scar on his forehead and a unique connection between the two. Draco follows in his father's footsteps and becomes a death eater and received the dark mark tattoo on his forearm. Then was chosen for a special mission by Lord Voldemort (Blair). One thing that Draco and Harry happily share is that they both become father and are seen
The lessons that children are taught from films are most often sugarcoated versions of life lessons that adults gather. Children’s films are about what adults want their children to see, not about what their children actually learn. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry leaves his aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, to study magic at the Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Soon after leaving he discovers that his parents were murdered by the most powerful dark lord, Voldemort, and he was the "boy who lived." Along the way to Hogwarts, Harry meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The three soon become best friends and plot to save Hogwarts from Voldemort's wrath.
