The Downfall of American Heroes Who isn't tired of seeing professional athletes making all the headlines, for things other than their performance in a game? The world of professional sports and their athletes are caught in a constant downward spiral. It is rare to find a player to look up to and respect in this day and age. There is too much greed, self-centeredness, and corruption associated with professional sports; it is almost ridiculous to watch. Lately it seems that there is an "i" in team, it has just been silent until recently. The hardwood isn't the only court to catch America's favorite athletes anymore. With more and more top performers shelling out the big bucks for attorneys, it makes law school look like a very good idea. We all know the now infamous O.J. Simpson Trial, a very big case and very serious crime, but now it seems commonplace for athletes to be in court. Sure it is looked down upon, but becoming more accepted by fans. Kobe Bryant went to trial and was acquitted on sexual assault charges filed by a 20-year-old girl ("Bryant isn't expected to appear"). Bryant was once a poster boy for the NBA and endorsements were pouring in; all that has now changed, but he still has a large amount of fan support. The Baltimore Ravens' star half-back, Jamal Lewis, is getting a terrific deal, so good even Wal-Mart is baffled ("Ravens RB Lewis suspended for two games, fined for another two"). This guy pleads guilty to a federal drug conspiracy case and gets a slap on the wrist. He is suspended for two games, fined for another two games, and his jail time starts at the end of the season. How convenient. Disruptive behavior is also taking away from the sports. Players are drawing too much attention to themselves and their actions, and not enough attention to their game. A perfect example is Dennis Rodman ("The List: NBA's biggest cancers"). Arguably one of the best rebounders of all-time, there is no argument about his athletic ability or championship rings. But his behavior on and off the court are what made him so publicized, and what he is best remembered for. This may have been what he was going for. There have been many other players to follow the lead of Rodman.
