The University of Massachusetts Lowell began at the turn of the 20th century. The university was originally two separate schools known as the Lowell Normal School and the Lowell Textile School. Over many years the two schools evolved and in 1975 they merged into the University of Lowell. In 1991 the university became part of the University of Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Lowell was born. The university has been expanding rapidly in the last five years. During the 2013-2014 school year, there were 16,969 students enrolled at the university. The year to year enrollment rate has increased in every department. The total enrollment has increased more than 10 percent every year since 2008. With the growing student body, accommodations must be made to ensure resources are available and students are safe. As part of Chancellor Marty Meehan's plan to expand the school, several additions have been made. The north campus has a new 80 million dollar research facility dedicated to cutting edge technology. The parking space has been expanded at the Riverside street lot. A large parking garage has been constructed to fit far more commuters in a tighter space.
Commuters driving in flood the area to get to class on time. This rapid influx of commuting students has put stress on the surrounding community's roads. Given the history of the university, it is apparent that these road ways were never designed to handle this sort of traffic. On most weekdays during the normal semester the traffic in the area peaks just before the hour from 8:00 to 11:00 AM. This coincides with the time that many classes get out and people have to walk to their next class. Many commuters are in a rush to get to class and are victims of the traffic ...

Giving students is the ability to traverse the vast majority of north campus while being protected from inclement weather would help them deal with New England winters. Cold, wet, and snowy winters are not particularly friendly to pedestrian traffic. Slush and road salt cover everything while hidden patches of ice lie in wait for unsuspecting victims. If students are able to live comfortably and safe, the trend of increasing enrollment is likely to continue.
In the end, it comes down to the university administration's understanding of the problem. If decision makers realize that the expansion of enrollment requires responsible expansion of facilities then they will surely push this project. There are too many benefits to commuting and on campus students ignore this proposal.
College Avenue in downtown State College divides Penn State’s campus (University Park) from the town. Walking down these sidewalks demonstrates the difference between these two with shops and restaurants on one side and classroom buildings, dormito...
First negative externality on campus is scheduling of bus because it never comes on time. Students have to wait for bus in hot weather or they even can come late because of it.
Is the Loop Bus as beneficial to students as it should be? The SGA Loop Bus is a service provided to Duquesne University students by the Student Government Association. It is a three fleet bus system that provides transportation from Duquesne University to Southside, Oakland, and Waterfront that is operated on Friday and Saturday during the academic school year. It is the subject of one of the major gripes with Duquesne University and is not quite what it is cracked up to be. There are many consequences due to the inconsistencies of the Loop Bus making it not only irritable to wait for but places you in danger.
Benjamin Franklin once stated “Those who surrender freedom for security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one.”
There is so much to be discovered in our vast world of technology. Scientists and researchers work hard everyday to educate themselves and others on the advances capable of being achieved. There are people learning about new technology, different scientific and medical methods, and most of all medicine everyday. However, there is always a price to pay with hypotheses running their course through experiments, and that is the testing subject. Scientists feel the best choice for such research is to use animals to be tested, and that great achievements in the science world are worth it. Just as these scientists are, testing on innocent animals is completely wrong. Just because they are available for testing, and don’t have any ability to opt out in these experiments, does not mean they are right for the job.

Have you ever wondered how some athletes have gotten so good at a certain sport? Have you ever thought about what they did in order for them to get this good? For some the answer is simple; workout and train. But for others the answer is different; the use of performance enhancing drugs such as steroids. There are some people that argue that steroids should be legalized and allowed in professional sports. Other people argue that steroids should not be allowed. Today I am going to state my opinion and justify my reason. Steroids should not be allowed in professional sports because it can be very dangerous to the athlete’s health, it is a way to gain and un-fair advantage and it can be dangerous in both social and physical aspects.
“The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him” (G.K. Chesterton). A soldier is a soldier no matter what. If they fight behind a screen, on the front line, or from a controller as long as they’re protecting this country, the people in it, and the people fighting for it they are honorable. Some think that because one does their fighting from a remote control drone means that they have no understanding of war, and in some ways that is true, but they are still taking someone’s life when they choose to press that button just like the solders on the front line takes someone’s life when they pull the trigger. Both people are fighting the same fight: they love the country they are defending the people in it they just do it from different standpoints. Drones
Imagine dedicating your life to a university not only on the academic level, but also the athletic level. With a full scholarship your time is dedicated to getting to class on time, finishing assignments, and making it to mandatory practices while also maintaining a strict workout schedule. With your day pretty much full of responsibilities, you do not have the time for a job to pay for anything that you may need outside of tuition, books, and housing. If your car breaks down or you run out of gas you have to pay for that out of your own pocket which is fairly difficult when you do not have an income to cover the costs and if you accept money or free services from any businesses, you could lose you eligibility as a NCAA athlete and lose your
The most noticeable inconvenience of driving in Miami is traffic congestion. In fact, because the highways are cluttered with a significant amount of vehicles carpooling is encouraged. For this purpose, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes were formed. Each weekday, a simple twenty-minute drive turns into an eternal wait for forward progress. With each minute that goes by cars advance less than twenty feet. And while the traffic may open up in some areas, in its entirety I-95 remains congested during the morning and evening hours, as seen in the image where cars on the South Florida Highways line up bumper-to-bumper. The cause for such highway clutter varies, but it is interesting to note the difficulty in explaining highway driving conditions. It is uncertain as to whether the accidents cause traffic congestion or the traffic congestion causes accidents. Either way, the main roads and highways commuters take to work are crowded with drivers. Furthermore, I-95 passes through several commercial districts in the lower Miami area. Many large trucks and commercial vehicles, as well as passenger vehicles, drive to work at these commercial areas. The weekday traffic congestions on the Miami roadways are, in large part, a major inconvenience to commuters, all with intent to arrive early to work.
I should receive a passing grade in this class because I can write now. Not just an exaggeration, but after another semester of English I finally feel confident that can write. Three of the reasons behind my confidence is I learned, I experienced and best of all I repeated. These three values helped prepare me for what is in store in English 1302 and here is why.
One solution for improving student transportation is offering a shuttle service. Although, UTSA already provides a shuttle service, it is limited to only two routes and can be unreliable. The transportation service at UTSA recommends waiting at the shuttle stop “30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled class time” (Business . . .). The thought of waiting in freezing temperatures trying to hide from the icy rain can be disheartening for some but it is a reality for students whose only way of transportation is through the shuttle. As a result of similar issues, Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, “provides 40 buses on 10 routes complete with GPS tracking“(Horan 52). The purpose of GPS trackin...
Students living on campus don’t have to worry about time because they live in the college. On the other hand, students who commute to school, have to worry about getting to class on time. Students living on campus don’t have to waste money on transportation or food since it is all covered under a plan. Unlike commuters, who aren’t covered under a plan, they have to pay more money to get to school as well as for food. Students who live on campus tend to know more people and they know more about what’s going on around campus. However, students, who commute, don’t have that advantage because they are home most of the time. Living on campus can be more beneficial than living at home in many ways.
Many don’t realize that the road to success isn’t so much a road as it is a winding,
Penn State’s dorm system does not guarantee housing after freshman year. The dorm rooms that are available are handed out by lottery. To avoid the risk of being homeless, one can get an apartment downtown, but even these are limited. The increased number of people being accepted to Penn State is making the problem worse. This editorial from The Daily Collegian focuses on that.
