I am going to take a positive approach in analyzing two works, unlike my previous paper. Frederick Jackson Turner and W.E.B. Du Bois captured and analyzed two different events in American history. Reading a selection from Tuner’s work, The Significance of the Frontier in American History, I believe he encapsulates aspects of American culture that was prevalent during a time of expansion and is still relevant today. W.E.B. Du Bois details a major problem facing freed blacks after the Civil War; assimilation into southern culture, a problem that would persist late into the 20th century. Both men in my opinion are objective, Du Bois more so than Turner, however, both men captured significant events in American history and should continue to be studied by disciples of history. The selection I read of Turner’s work The Significance of the Frontier in American History, I believe captures characteristics of American exceptionalism.
