In Coriolanus, there exist two defining contrasts between the principles of Roman republicanism and the republicanism of the United States. The republicanism that is most familiar in today’s society is one espoused for in the Declaration of Independence and solidified in the Constitution. The great ideals of civic involvement, politics, and the rule of law. These points are the epitome of the American system and are associated with American republicanism. America is a virtuous society. Rome, at the time of Coriolanus is not up to the standard of the United States, instead the Roman is less ideal and certainly less virtuous. There do exists elements of a functioning republic, but that is where the similarities with America end. The play showcases Rome as a state void of beauty and thought, which quite the opposite of America.
The first point defining contrast comes at the start of Coriolanus. Menenius, in his discussion with the commoners (plebeians) discusses the Roman Senate and compares it to the human stomach. “….Rebell'd against the belly…” (Coriolanus, Act I, Sc. I). Right here the description of a functioning body of government being like the stomach create quite an image. A stomach is there to digest and simply process. There is no thought or reason. Me...

There are often parallels evoked between the United States and Rome. True, both are great powers that have indeed conquered the world is similar fashions, but the American republic has not fallen into an empire in the way that Rome did. The reason for the American republic’s survival for over two hundred years is because America is in many ways quite the opposite of the Roman republic. Love of the beautiful is not downplayed in the US. There exists a culture, arts, philosophy, and literature. America is a rational nation, not one that is hostile to it. Rome is irrational. A republic without the romance. A state of laws, conquest and heroes. If there is a great difference between the two republics it is best personified in Coriolanus. In America the secret to her success in avoiding the fate of Rome is being able to think.
