In 2010 one of the worlds largest and most devastating oil spills took place on the Gulf on Mexico. Though many believe that the oil spill was an act of desperation by BP, it’s affects were and will be long lasting. BP is a petroleum distribution company that provides well quality gas to many customers throughout the United States. Yes, the oil spill was extremely bad, but did BP go about the right way of explaining the circumstances to the public correctly? I believe, just as many others believe that they did not. So that’s what we are going to further look into. How did BP actually start the oil spill, what steps did BP take in order to stop the oil spill, and the devastating affects the oil spill left on our communities from physical damages to communication damages.
The Oil Spill Starting
BP had the Deep water Horizon oilrig in the Gulf of Mexico in April of 2010, searching for means of oil to provide for the company. After searching for the oil and finding means of it, there was a gas release and explosion that took place. During the explosion 11 crewmembers had lost their lives. After the explosion had finished the company had realized that hydrocarbons were leaking into the water. It has been estimated that 4.9 million barrels of oil had leaked into the Golf of Mexico. BP at this point in time had two main issues, how are we going to fix the oil spill and how are we going to tell the public we made a mistake. The company had everything riding on how this oil spill would turn out.

BP is still a company today that has many people angry about what had happened and has lost thousands of customers forever. Though the effects of the oil spill were devastating and some are still being repaired today, our communities came together to help each other out in a time of need.
