In July of 1995, Florida put into effect a new law banning the use of gill nets in all inshore water of Florida. The law contained two significant provisions: 1) some non-gill nets would be allowed, but maximum size would now be limited to 500 square feet; and 2) unemployment compensation would be available to affected netters through a 20 million dollar fund set aside to purchase the nets that would be made obsolete(Stearns, par.5). This ban on nets has led to a dramatic comeback for a variety of fish species, including the Spanish mackerel and Florida mullet. In the following essay I intend to show the ban laws, what they encompass whom they affected, as well as their reaction. Most importantly, I intend to show the ban has made an overall improvement on Florida's marine environment.
Over the past 100 years, Florida has been known for having some of the best recreational fishing as well as marine environments. Locals and tourists alike could pick any given day to spend on the water and return with a wide variety of game fish. Unfortunately, over the past decade this trend has been on the decline. The cause of this decrease in the population of Florida's marine environment as well as in other parts of the world, is the indiscriminate use of the monofilament fishing net (par.2). One of the areas that have seen just how destructive these nets can be, is the Florida Coast.
In 1990, commercial gill-netters harvested 26 million pounds of mullet (DeYoung, par.56). In 1994, Florida's became alarmed when the mullet spawning population plummeted to about 15 percent of normal. They also felt the impact this loss of forage food had on game fish. One of the largest causes of this plummet is the lucrative market in the Far East for mullet row, which had almost completely decimated Florida's stock of these fish (Stearns, par.2-3).
Due to this large decline, the Florida Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) placed restrictions on recreational and commercial harvest of mullet. In 1992, recreational fishermen were now limited to fifty fish per boat per day, with no size limit, while commercial fishermen have no "bag limit", but are required to release any mullet under eleven inches in length. The results of the restrictions lowered the harvest on mullet by recreational fishermen from four million to one million pounds. There was a 75 percent reduction in recreational harvest as a result of the FMC's restrictions.

Within the state of Florida there are dozens of individualized, non-profit organizations making an effort to help the local wildlife. The local land and marine wildlife includes birds, geckos, frogs, snakes, panthers, manatees, sea turtles, fishes, sharks, corals, lizards and many, many more. Florida State is located on the Southeastern tip of the United States providing a unique opportunity for conservation of salt-water animals. While there are animal conservation efforts taking place all over the world, this essay will focus on two animal species that humans are specifically trying to save in Florida State. The two main animal species of focus are manatees and sea turtles.

Countless internal factors made Jewish resistance extremely difficult. Ecological disasters have plagued Louisiana’s coastal ecosystems for many years. It can be seen through the massive loss of coastal wetlands thus destroying habitat for fish populations. Saltwater estuaries are the life support for a variety of fish and crustacean species. With these marshlands disappearing at such a fast rate, it makes sense that the fish populations are going to disappear along with it. If we don’t make change to this dire to situation soon, there might not be this wonderful coastal ecosystem in Southern Louisiana for future generations to enjoy.
The resistance was a key part of survival for many of the Jews during the Holocaust.
Over the years, as the world has evolved, fishing methods were improved as well, and, especially from the 20th century, several changes had forced the way the fishery was done in North Atlantic. As world population was increasing quickly, the cod demand has grown tremendously. New technologies were introduced and thus catch rates of northern cod began to exceed the hazardous limits of the stock’s ability to rebuild. This fact summed with another that will be shown below led to the cod collapse in the Atlantic Canada by the 90’s.
Anyone who paid attention in history class knows about the horrific crime against humanity committed by Adolf Hitler known as the Jewish Holocaust. But what they did not teach was that the Jews refused to go without a fight. In fact, the Jews resisted the Nazis on multiple occasions. Three common examples are the Buchenwald resistance group, The Warsaw uprising and the Bielski partisans. In each instance, the Jews gambled with their lives for their freedom.
Bycatch is the accidental capture or damage of other marine species during commercial fishing. Animals such as dolphins, sea turtles, whales, seals, sea lions, etc… get caught in the nets or hooks during trawling. These animals usually end up dying from various causes, often broken fins, deep lacerations, and drowning. It is estimated that more than 300,000 small whales and dolphins are killed each year from commercial fishing. (Anne Houtman pg. 246) Furthermore, fishing methods such as bottom trawling destroy spawning grounds and invertebrates. There are fishing methods and equipment that reduce bycatch and they are growing in popularity, however, bycatch still remains a major threat to marine life.
How could anyone survive in the ghettos, let alone be able to resist. The Holocaust took place in World War 1 and was a mass murder of the Jewish population by the Nazis. Millions of Jews were put into walled off areas called ghettos. Many died in the ghettos due to poor conditions and Nazi brutality. During the Holocaust, there were various forms of Jewish Resistance both armed and unarmed carried out in order to preserve the Jews’ faith and honor.
Why resistance? There are so many different aspects of the Holocaust to research, so why focus on this particular one? Well, I think it’s a great way for students to learn about the “silver lining” per se of this event. I think it’s a not-so-well-known aspect of a very well-known event. It’s important that people are aware that Jews and some non-Jews didn’t just sit back and let these horrific events go on without a fight. Armed resistance was a way for Jews to fight back and feel like they were actually doing something to the Germans.
In the Holocaust, the Jewish people had two options on how to resist, passively or actively. When you actively resist, you bring a gun, but have a higher risk of dying. Passive resistance allowed them to stay alive (or at least have a higher probability,) but didn’t do as much as someone who killed a general or a soldier. Miep Gies is an example of somebody who passively resisted Nazi Power in World War Two by hiding her Jewish friends, like the Frank and Van Daan family even though she wasn’t allowed to. The reasons I feel like passive resistance is better than active resistance is because it preserves life, helps the society, and prevents a war-torn environment.
To fish or not to fish is a personal choice. The fact that the oceans are being overfished is a growing concern for individuals, organizations, and governments throughout the world. In this paper I want to discuss the effects of overfishing on the restaurant industry, and possible solutions to solve the problem. Fishing is an ongoing source of food for people around the world. In many countries it is a food staple in their everyday diet. In more modern societies eating fish has become a sensual experience, and not just for the wealthy. It hasn't been until population explosions in the last century that the demand for seafood has led to more effective fishing techniques and technologies. Now the demand for popular fish like the salmon, tuna, sea bass, cod and hoki, which is the key fish in McDonalds filet o' fish, is diving wild populations to dangerously low levels. The methods used to catch the amount of fish demanded by the industry do not leave sustainable populations in the wild. In an attempt to preserve the fish population, governments have set limits on the minimum size that may be harvested and how many of each may be taken. Boundaries have been set up saying which areas can be fished and which ones should be left alone. A number of smaller fisheries have gone out of business because of the limits imposed by the government. This leads to even less fish being harvested and brought to market. Therefore the amount and varieties of fish at markets are smaller and can cause shortages for wholesalers and restaurants. Some restaurants will no longer have the variety on their menus that they used to enjoy.
