"The dictionary defines happiness as being fortunate, cheerful, lucky, or expressing joy. Happiness can be defined in many ways based off of an individual’s personal belief or preference. Aristotle was a Greek philosopher whose writing covered topics including biology, zoology, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, politics and music. His views on physical science immensely shaped his later views on his Enlightenment theories. He was one of the greatest thinkers in the history of western science and philosophy making many contributions mathematically as well as scientifically.

Since he was the student of Plato this heavy influenced his many publications and gave him the popular medieval outlook; which is known as the Aristotelian worldview. One of his many works includes the Nichomachean Ethics, where he discusses the theory of happiness. That is relevant today his main question was “What is the ultimate purpose of human existence”?. He further discussed the idea of what people believed to be true happiness whether it be wealth, family, or even being a well-known popular individual. But he felt that none of the previous mentioned ideas would ever suffice; “That which is always desirable in itself and never for the sake of something else”. Meaning that something that you truly may desire like riches is what makes an individual truly happy.

It’s one of those things where it is preprogrammed in our minds that for someone to be truly happy you have to be financially stable. He believes that happiness is the final goal that equals ones totality of one’s life. It’s never something that can be gained and lost like someone losing a couple of pounds from a fast diet. Therefore, God alone can satisfy the will of man, according to the words of the Psalms (102:5): “Who alone satisfies your desire with good things.” Therefore, God alone constitutes man’s happiness.” (Summa Theologica Part 2. Q.1. Article 8; meaning that nothing can contradict the truth.

In conclusion the difference between Aquinas belief in happiness is that he believes that the only way to true happiness is not only through good virtues but also through putting your trust in God. And allowing him to lead you and guide you to the right path which is the right path to true everlasting happiness. While Aristotle believed that you could attain to true happiness through your good virtues and a positive attitude. Proving that a person’s upbringing does heavily affect their beliefs.
