Managing Conflict and Negotiations
In week one, the class read and discussed topics related to problem-based learning and managing conflict and negotiation. Also, the Learning Team handbook and tools were introduced and teams were assigned. The required readings, class discussions and sharing of experiences were valuable in learning more about these topics.
The 9-step problem-solving model is a valuable, systematic tool used to identify the real problem and make an intelligent decision. This process guides you to look at creating future solutions and not just solving past problems. The 9 steps of this model include (1)describing the situation, (2)defining the problem statement, (3)describing the end state goals, (4)identifying alternatives, (5)evaluating the alternatives, (6)performing a risk assessment, (7)recommending a solution, (8)implementing the solution and (9)evaluating the results.
In Chapter 14, Kreitner and Kinicki discuss managing conflict and negotiations. Through the readings, I learned that conflict is inevitable but not necessarily destructive. Functional conflict can lead to growth, increased awareness and self-improvement and dysfunctional conflict is not productive and can negatively affect organizational performance. One of the major differences between the film and the novel is the depiction of the delusional image of reality. However, it still manages to bring forth the dystopian image of both their Utopian societies. In The Truman Show, life is a real life play in an environment that provides comfortable lifestyle and happiness at the cost of reality. The producer of The Truman Show, Christof states, “We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented”. This message is the underlying theme in the story and as such, will foreshadow Truman’s acceptance of a delusional reality in the film. Meanwhile, in the film everyone except for Truman is acting and not living an authentic life. There is no sense of “real”; no real affinity, no secrecy, and no faith, all of which Truman is blindly unawar...
Thus, when he saw a light fall from the sky and he heard the director’s voice on the radio, Truman began to become suspicious. He remembered Lauren, an actress who had told him that it was just a TV show and so, he went to find her. He travelled across the sea, talked to Christof and then climbed a flight of stairs in the sky, escaping into the outside world. Unbeknownst to him, Truman Burbank's whole life has been the subject of a hugely popular 24-hour-per-day television show entitled “The Truman Show” (Propagandee, 2012).
In The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir and written by Andrew Wiccol, a man named Truman Burbank is unknowingly the star of a reality TV show. The film’s audience finds this out before he does, and wants him to realize that nothing around him is real and that it would be best for him to leave Seahaven. As the reality that Christof created falls apart around Truman, the audience observes every moment and knows the truth and wants Truman to as well. The intimate relationship established with the audience in The Truman Show is scrutinized because of the surveillance that Truman is under and the constructed reality falling apart.
As we grow up we are told to be individuals, but once we grow up we obey authority figures and change our beliefs to fit in with others. No matter what age we are we will always comply to a behavior or belief to fit in with a group different than ours or to be liked. We do not like to be judged or looked at as an outsider; this will remain the same in which ever situation we find ourselves in. Whether it be in a professional setting such as work or a social setting with friends. When thinking of conformity and obedience we mostly think of cults and prisons but it is not always the case.

In this first stage of cognition, the cave dweller is shackled and can only see shadows of figures on the wall in front of him. His reality is based on his imagination of these figures. “To them, I said, the truth would be literally nothing but the shadows of the images.” Similarly, Truman’s reality is based on this imaginary world where his parents, wife, and everyone else around him are hired actors. Early in the film Truman seems to be happy although he is already starting to imagine himself in Fiji which he points out is the furthest place from Seahaven.
If the Truman Show were to really take place, then the Star would never, or at least have great trouble, spotting the inconsistencies because he has no frame of reference, no other standard to compare his world to. The inconsistences only exist for the viewer and the cast. Truman will not suspect a thing and will come to treat them as a natural occurrence if they happen regularly. Even irregular, rare instances will not give lead for Truman to question his world, although it will catch him by surprise. The Truman show written by Peter Weir follows the story of Truman Burbank whom of which lives in a fake and false world, but is unaware that his whole life has been controlled by the creator of the show, Christof, and that all the people in his life are actors and his life is a television production and his city is an elaborate television set. The Truman Show is a satirical commentary and talks about how the media is a large influence in our lives. Weir uses many film techniques, such as production design, camera, editing, lighting, sound and characterisation, to make us empathise with the protagonist, Truman, as he learns the truth about his life and escapes the television set and ends Christof’s control on his life. Because Truman was being manipulated for most of his life, he had never experienced true freedom. For example, Christof could never allow him to leave the island of Seahaven because if he did he would discover the truth and ruin the TV show. The writers of the show tried to nip Truman’s enthusiasm for travel in the bud such as when he announced to the class that he wanted to be an explorer when he grew up. Many people enjoy working or participating in a group or team, but when a group of people work together chances are that conflicts will occur. Hazleton describes conflict as the discrepancy between what is the perceived reality and what is seen as ideal (2007). “We enter into conflicts reluctantly, cautiously, angrily, nervously, confidently- and emerge from them battered, exhausted, sad, satisfied, triumphant. And still many of us underestimate or overlook the merits of conflict- the opportunity conflict offers every time it occurs” (Schilling, nd.). Conflict does not have to lead to a hostile environment or to broken relationships. Conflict if resolved effectively can lead to a positive experience for everyone involved. First, there must be an understanding of the reasons why conflicts occur. The conflict must be approached with an open mind. Using specific strategies can lead to a successful resolution for all parties involved. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument states “there are five general approaches to dealing with conflict. The five approaches are avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration. Conflict resolution is situational and no one approach provides the best or right approach for all circumstances” (Thomas, 2000).
Throughout one’s life, one establishes many relationships. Some are built upon, and become strong and unshakable, some are broken and left to dissolve. While some are paved slowly and with love, blossoming to become something wonderful, others are blown apart - the pieces scattered, never to be put back together again. Though these relationships vary, from professional to personal, they are all prone to encountering some form of conflict. John Dewey has designed a problem solving sequence with 6 (six) steps, listed and explained below, to facilitate resolution of these conflicts.
Conflict is known to be inseparable in all human interactions. In any organization, role differentiation acquires the different uses of conflict handling styles. Work direction, reward, supervision, discipline and performance review also involve the use of conflict handling styles. Organizational change and control is also viewed from a conflict perspective. In attempts to explain the nature or dynamics of a particular organizational phenomenon, conflict may be incorporated as a causal factor (Brown and Peterson, 1993).
PO was in group as scheduled and moderately participated in the group activities. PO learned problem-solving technique that include defining the problem; examining obstacles; acting on the choice; learning from the results. PO was engaged well in the small group exercise, and offered other groups with different solutions and ideas for problem solving. PO appears to understand that effective problem solving is an important life skill. PO’s behavior and participation are consistent with the maintenance stage of change.
