Gambling, card games, betting on horses and other sports have always been an important business in the mafia. They operated in luxurious or illegal gambling operations all over the United States; they paid off law enforcement so that they would ignore the gambling operations. Over the years the history of gambling and casinos have changed especially since 1931 when Nevada legalized gambling. For my final paper I particularly choose Casino as the classic mafia movie that depicts an insight into the world or organize crime and gambling.
Casino is based of the story of Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal and the overtaking of the mafia in Las Vegas. As stated from the Felt Top article, “It was the mob’s most successful undertaking before the entire organization was taken down by a little schmuck called Anthony “the ant” Spilatro who ruled the strip with an iron fist before meeting his fate in a cornfield in Indiana” (www.gamemasteronline.com). Casino depicts the greed, deception, money, power, and murder that unfolded between two mobster best friends Ace and Nicky over a gambling empire.
The opening of the movie started out with “ But at night, you couldn’t see the dessert that surrounds Las Vegas. But it’s in the dessert where lots of the town’s problems are solved. ...ernment officials, and angry mob bosses pick apart each other piece by piece. Sam played by the rules and kept a low-key profile while Ginger and Nicky allowed power and greed to take over. They lied, cheat, and stole to get to the top, they didn’t care who they threw under the bus all that was important was fulfilling there extravagant lifestyles of wealth and power. In the end the bosses will do whatever it takes to keep the tradition of old school mobsters alive, eventually these members enjoy the lifestyle too much that they allow all the power and money to get into there heads. Deception and corruption plays a huge role through the movie since no one can trust each other and holes in the dessert hung against their heads. The film did a well job of showing the corruption with in the inner workings of Las Vegas and exposes the crime and punishment that follows.
