There are many different opinions on what the word organic really means. For some it means that the produce was farmed with no chemicals and pesticides and it is better for us as well as eco friendly towards the Earth. These organic products are then shipped to a supermarket near you. However, not all people have the same definition of organic. These people view and define a product of being organic as being grown naturally and locally. The idea of harvesting the produce and then putting it all in a truck and sending it to many supermarkets hundreds of miles away is not their idea of organic. Using a truck to ship the food to different locations completely defeats the purpose of the food being truly organic since it is being transported somewhere far away in a truck that is burning the fossil fuels needed to drive there. This separates the organic farms from the sustainable local –grown farms in their different ideas and views.
Long Island farms have appeared suddenly and are making a lot of money selling to local Long Island people. These farms grow fresh and organic food to provide for the needs of the people of Long Island. Most of these farms will not ship to anywhere further than New York City, which is about a 40 -50 minute delivery. These local farms are very strict on their belief that real organic food is the food that is locally grown and delivered.

In conclusion, the concept of something being truly organic has been disputed amongst people for various years. Whether it matters if for something to be 100% organic if it’s shipped from California or either here on Long Island it is your decision to make in the end. In my opinion I believe that locally and naturally grown food is truly organic because it doesn’t use nearly as much fossil fuels as shipping food from another state would. This is better for the environment further stressing the word organic and also since it can be delivered in a maximum in 2 days, it’s fresher. These different views separate the organic farms and the local and sustainable farms. Therefore, locally and sustainably farmed food in my opinion is truly organic.
Steven Shapin is an expert when it comes to telling people the reality of the situation. In his, article “What Are You Buying When You Buy Organic?” Shapin exposes and explains the truth behind the word organic. He explains that our view on organic is not a reality. The small farms that we picture in our heads are really just big business in disguise and these big businesses are trying to do good by supposedly not using harmful pesticides. Which are supposed to not damage the environment but in reality they are probably not making any sort of difference.
