Sara M. Evans was born on December 2, 1943. She studied American history with an emphasis on women studies. She earned her degree at the University of North Carolina, and is now a Professor at the University of Minnesota. She teaches, or has taught, many courses including several History and History of Feminism courses. She has published 6 books on gender, social movements, and history. Four of her six books are about how women affected the growth of America. She goes in-depth in each of these books to show the reader her ideas. Evans focuses on gender, particularly female, she specializes in gender analysis, women's history and social movements. She believes that women helped to change and shape America just like men have. She tells about how women in the Native American culture had rights and duties equal in importance to the mens duties. Events and examples of women's influence on America are then shown up to the 21st century. There are chapters on many major events in American history that history books would often place the emphasis on men and their roles in the situation. Evans shows how women also influenced the outcome of these events. This book is intended to teach of women's history and show the role that women had in the unfolding of America and their fight for liberty. The book is set out in chronological order, starting with the first American women in the indian civilizations and going until the new century. It goes in depth on how women influenced major social changes that occurred in the history of America. It was well written and used a great deal of outside sources to prove its argument. The multiple sources used helps to validate her information because she has others that will support her views and that have written books on some of the same subjects that she is. Evans uses a fair amount of evidence in her book to convince the reader of her views that throughout the history of the United States, women helped to shape America. It focuses on the history of America and how women influenced the changes that occurred and some major events that happened. It would have been helpful for her to expand and show the influence that women had on the shaping of the world. There are several pictures and primary documents that are used throughout the book. Several books were used as resources while Evans was writing this book. The sources she used seemed to be well balanced, not leaning on one or two books
