Life of Pi, the story by Yann Martel begins with a religious boy that has two distinguishing personalities and one of them is symbolized through the character Richard Parker. Richard Parker is represented as a tiger to convey the salvage side of Pi, and to display the dual nature of humanity. In addition to Pi having the two conflicting personalities the article of “Id” presents the Freudian psychoanalytic theory in which explains “the three agencies of the human personality”(Id). To conclude, through the use of the article “Id” and Martel use of imagery to represent Richard parker as Pi’s other personality, one can see both how humans can have clashing personalities and how Pi has a clashing personality.
Likewise Martel’s use of ambiguous imagery validates how Richard Parker in the beginning of the book is going to be Pi’s survival side. When Richard Parker was first introduced in a black and white photo Martel gives Richard parker an ambiguous appearance by giving the animal a human name and by saying “Richard Parker, can you believe what has happened to us”(Martel 97) . Giving a human image to the readers mind early on conveys that Richard Parker is in fact a human an human that us reader’s want to “extract personality from appearance”(Martel 87), but the appearance that Martel wants the people to extract from is Pi himself. For Pi has this survival side that he does not need at the time and that is why Richard Parker is not described in great detail so that the people can know from the beginning that Pi has another side to himself. Finally through the end of the book Martel uses imagery to conclude how Pi still has Richard Parker, but does not need him. Through the end of the book Pi happens to stumble on an algae island that a plethora of food. As exploring the island and getting use to the island Richard Parker was said to “killed beyond his need” (Martel 269). The salvage side of Pi is now at ease with Pi as Pi watches himself be this beast. As going by day by day Richard Parker fill’s his stomach with all that it can eat to insure that Pi will live, as Pi himself eats mostly algae to go back to his morals.
Pi was afraid and surprised that Richard Parker was in the boat once he had lifted the blanket. Then Richard Parker had roared at him and tried to attack by his claws ,but pi had gotten away as soon as he did. Pi and Richard Parker started to roamed slowly around the boat in the middle of the ocean. Pi didn't trust Richard Parker because he knows that he only wanted to kill and eat pi. Pi tried to get rid of the tiger and then he tried avoiding the tiger, but as time goes on he got tired of trying get rid of Richard Parker. So then he began tame the tiger by using his whistle he had gotten from his locker. As he and Richard Parker started to get along through the past days,they have become really close friends.
In the book Life of Pi Yann Martel tells the story of a man, Pi Patel, who survives a shipwreck and has to live on a lifeboat for months with a wild tiger named Richard Parker. Throughout the book, Pi struggles to survive on the lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. He had limited resources and had to deal with challenges, such as bad weather, and Richard Parker. Pi survived in the end, but it was because of his determination to survive throughout the whole journey. Yann Martel displays the theme that people must have the will to survive by his use of figurative language, such as similes, metaphor, and personification.
Prendick and Pi are sickened when they display bestiality despite the fact that the animal tendencies of both protagonists were present from the beginning of both novels. Chapter Eight of Life of Pi establishes that the mirror in the zoo is a physical representation of the potential threat humans pose, and the savagery to which humans can descend. This is substantiated in the ensuing events when Pi, who does not appear to be in his right mind, rescues Richard Parker from a watery death and allows him in the lifeboat. As Parker is shown to be an embodiment of Pi, this suggests that Pi is inviting the bestial traits Parker represents into cohabitation with him. Furthermore, Pi “tears flowing down [his] cheeks” (Martel 203) breaks the neck of a flying fish. Yet, not a long while later he can “gleefully bludgeon to death a dorado” (Martel 205) or suck the blood out of a freshly decapitated sea turtle. Pi comments “a person can get used to anything, even to killing” (Martel 205). He further notices with shame his animal-like habits and compares himself to Parker stating he “ate like an animal, that this noisy frantic, unchewing wolfing-down of [his] was exactly the way Richard Parker ate” (Martel 249). Pi’s challenge to survive unconquerable circumstances is conveyed through Martel’s use of symbolism. Within majority of the novel, Pi and Richard Parker are aboard the lifeboat and face a multitude of hardships throughout their journey, with the most obvious being their struggle to survive 227 days floating upon the Pacific Ocean.
Having just experienced the sinking of his family’s ship, and being put onto a life boat with only a hyena, Pi felt completely lost and alone. When he sees Richard Parker, the Bengal tiger from his family’s zoo, it is a familiar face to him. His initial reaction is to save the life of his familiar friend so that he may have a companion, and a protector aboard the lifeboat. Suddenly Pi realizes just what he is doing. He is saving the life of Richard Parker, by welcoming him, a 450 pound Bengal tiger, onto the small lifeboat. He experiences a change of heart when helping the tiger onto the boat. Pi realizes that he is now posing a threat on his own life. With Richard Parker on the boat, Pi is faced with not only the fight to survive stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, but the fight to survive living with a meat eating tiger. The change of heart that Pi experiences might possibly mean that he is an impulsive thinker. It may mean that he often does something on impulse without thinking it through, and then later regrets his actions.
An id and ego split is also shown between Pi and Richard Parker. Richard Parker is an imaginary tiger that is created by Pi in order to keep him alive and focused on staying alive. Pi eventually abandons his superego and partakes in eating meat, even though he was a strict vegetarian prior to being lost at sea. Over the duration of Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, the story relates to Freud’s theories in several ways that are made blatantly obvious; these relations are what makes this story come together to keep the reader involved and interested. He lives in a zoo, and is surrounded and influenced by animals daily. His knowledge of animals grows as he does, and he learns and sees new things year after year at the zoo. One peculiar, yet crucial thing that Pi learns while living in the zoo, is the concept of zoomorphism. Zoomorphism, “is where an animal takes a human being or another animal, to be one of its kind”(84). He explains that within the zoo that he spent his childhood, there were many cases of zoomorphism, from the strange friendly relationship between the goats and the rhinoceroses, to the even stranger friendly predator-prey relationship between a viper and a mouse. Pi then says that the only explanation for zoomorphism is that the “measure of madness moves life in strange but saving ways”(85). The rhinoceros and goats get along because the rhinoceros, “[is] in need of companionship”(85), and without the goats, the rhinoceros would become depressed and die. This explanation of zoomorphism is major foreshadowing and background on why Richard Parker and Pi can live together on the lifeboat. Like the rhinoceros, both Pi and Richard Parker would have died without the company of another being. The “madness” that is the relationship between Richard Parker and Pi, scares Pi and causes him stress. However, this stress and fear keeps Pi alive, and ultimately saves his life. The most significant level is psychological because it is very important to a person’s emotional and physical survival. In order for someone to survive, he or she must have a positive mind with faith and determination in every action they take, Despite the fact that having high hopes with slim chances of survival is not as easy as it seems. “In its general form such a requirement insists that important relations (survival, identity, psychological connectedness)”. (Brennan 225). Trying to survive, Pi has to struggle with himself mentally: he has to go against his ethics like rectitude and religion pledge. To do that easily Pi finds his animalistic part which he called in his story as Richard Parker. May be because of his religious grounds he would have never done things like killing people eating fish or cannibalizing humans as done with just imagining himself as a Bengal tiger and he admits that “If I still had the will to live, it was thanks to Richard Parker. He kept me from thinking too much about my family and my tragic circumstances. He pushed me to go on living. I hated him for it, yet at the same time I was grateful.” (Martel, 219) This quote shows that he used this imagination to kill his loneliness boredom...
It also makes it very clear that Richard Parker could have been a disguised idea of Pi’s actual id, the reason for his survival. Meanwhile Pi stood for his own ego and somewhat managed to answer to both his id and super ego to some extent. By the end of the novel the readers come to conclude Mr. Patel does come full circle and carries all three aspects, the id, ego, and super ego and is a functioning member of society once again. Imagine losing all of your family without being to say goodbye, only to be stuck in the middle of the ocean, and no one coming to your help. The story “Life of Pi” is a story that makes people believe in miracles. The protagonist name is Piscine Molitor Patel, but he calls himself Pi to avoid people mispronouncing his name. The first half of the book Pi talks about his background and his religions. The main story talks place in the second half of the book. His family is moving their zoo to Canada, so they decide to go on the boat with the animals. A few days later the ship sinks and Pi is the only one human to survive. Pi is stuck on the life boat with hyena, tiger, orangutan, and a zebra. He is lost at sea for 227 days and only he and a tiger named Richard Parker are alive. When he tells people about his survivor story they don’t believe him. Pi then tells a story that makes the animal represent humans and people start to believe him more. We, as humans, often underestimate the fragility of our morals and “humanity”. In Life of Pi, author Yann Martel tells the story of a young boy named Pi who, after being shipwrecked and losing his entire family, must somehow survive in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a grown tiger for days on end by abandoning all the morals he once valued. Through Pi’s story, Martel shows how easily humans can become akin to animals when finding themselves in a desperate situation.

This part of the text implies to me that Pi is making the boundary between his humanity and his actions that he sees as savage. Richard Parker’s territory in the story is the bottom of the boat and under the tarpaulin. I see Richard Parker’s territory metaphorically as Pi’s savage side. Pi’s territory in his story is on top of the tarpaulin and on the raft, which I see metaphorically as the humane side of his personality. By making this separation, Pi is addressing the issue of what is savage and what is not within himself.
As the reader examines the novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the reader recognizes the similarities between the story of the animals and the factual story. The main character Piscine Molitor Patel, known as Pi, goes through many struggles once he is stuck on a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean which are shown between both of his stories. Throughout the novel, Martel describes to the readers the relationships the Pi has between the animals in the story of animals and the real people in the factual story. In Life of Pi, Pi meets many different animals on his journey on the lifeboat that influence him in many ways, including the zebra, which represents the Taiwanese sailor; the hyena, which represents the chef; Orange Juice, the orangutan, which represents Pi’s mother; and the Royal Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, which represents Pi himself.

Each of his claws was sharp as a knife” (Martel 108). Pi describes Richard Parker as an extremely dangerous, fearful, and vicious predator. This causes Pi keep aware because he is on a boat with a deadly carnivore. He tries to keep awake at night while being on the lifeboat with Richard Parker from the fear of being attacked and eaten by the Bengal tiger. However, since Richard Parker is Pi’s id, it was actually him keeping himself aware and alive. Pi states, “If I still had the will to live, it was thanks to Richard Parker.
