The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 by a group of confederate veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee. The group was formed by white supremacists as a way to rebel against the republican party reconstruction that would establish equality for African Americans. Members of the Ku Klux Klan, led by Nathan Bedford Forest, targeted white and black republican leaders which often led to violence and sometimes death. The goal of the southern democrats was to violently intimidate the black race and any republican who tried to gain political power. The Ku Klux Klan became known as terrorist as they were responsible for thousands of deaths all because they wanted to diminish the political power of southern blacks and republicans. Members of the Ku Klux Klan held secret meetings which contained extravagant ceremonies. They established what they called an “Invisible Empire of the South.” The disguised themselves with costumes that consisted of solid white robes, usually sheets.
