Even though social media has a negative connotation in today’s society in terms of productivity it can however be used for good. Facebook and YouTube for example can be used to stimulate collaborations in schools across the country. There are have been many advances in social networking technologies that allow for new and more efficient means of learning and communicating that can cause some changes in education (Berg, Berquam, and Christoph, 2007). Even though the debate on the role that social media plays in education is continuously stirring, it is undeniable that social media can vastly improve the learning experience as well as allow the students and teachers to learn and interact in different methods (Lederer, 2012). Teachers who are utilizing techniques that incorporate newer technologies and social media almost immediately increase students’ engagement, increase proficiency and build a better communication platform. Teachers can use YouTube to record educational-related videos and students are able to watch them on YouTube. Not only that, but video communication can be the future of multimedia communication (Tong, 2009). As the debate over the role of networking technology in school continue, arguments for and against it are attempting to find a balance in its innovation. Author Robert B. Kozmo, wrote an article called “Reframing the Debate.” In this article he addresses the standpoint that Richard Clark, an author, takes on social media. Clark believes that media does not have any impact on learning whatsoever. He stands by this argument very firmly(Kozmo, 1994, 7).
