From reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, evidence showed that our culture could be different in a way that involves a lot of the same. Our culture shows variation between this story as our society contains conflict where everything is the same in The Giver. Another difference is Jonas’s sensitivity to pain which seems to be magnified compared to the pain humans feel in reality. A third aspect of this story that relates to modern society is the fear of being given great responsibility for the first. One thing that is exploited in this book is the lack of societal conflict. It is nearly inevitable to stumble across this theme in the book, because it contrasts our lifestyle. In our society we tend to be fueled by our differences. That leads to both conflict and cooperation. However, the culture of the book seems to fear this lifestyle, because they can’t handle the pain to comes with social conflict.
