Law Enforcement intelligence is a development of military and national security intelligence. Over the years, this type of intelligence will go through many names but as of today it is known as Intelligence –led policing. Intelligence- led policing’s main focus is on key criminal activities. This paper will discuss community policing, problem-oriented policing, and CompStat, as they relate to intelligence-led policing.
Intelligence- led policing originated in Great Britain by Kent Constabulary. This type of policing was developed because of the severe increase in property related offenses. Intelligence-led policing was originally called The Kent Policing Model. It de-emphasized responses to service calls by prioritizing calls and referring less serious calls for general non police services to other agencies. This type of policing’s main focus was on the collection and analysis of crime and social data to support on-going investigation as well as identifying criminals and crime trends.
