Imagery and Symbolism in “Hills Like White Elephants”
Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” is written in a very minimalistic style and therefore relies heavily on literary devices such as symbolism and imagery to create a vivid environment that shows the reader that there is a lot more depth to the plot than what appears on the surface. At a glance, the story may appear to be nothing more than a casual conversation between a couple named Jig and “the man” while they wait at a train station between Barcelona and Madrid. However, a closer look reveals the story is more about a life changing decision the couple face regarding abortion. Hemingway effectively uses symbolic imagery to develop and reveal the relationship and tension shared between the couple due to their conflicting views about the abortion. The terrain, hills, railroad station and even the baggage they carry and alcohol involved are all symbols which Hemingway employs throughout the story to develop the theme.
The terrain that surrounds the characters at the train station is of great significance as it symbolically concludes the different perspectives the characters share on the issue of Jig’s operation. It is clear that Jig does not want to undergo the operation whereas the American man wants her to do so that they may continue the carefree life they lead without disturbance. There are two sides to the terrain that surrounds them. Both sides visually represent the choice they have in terms of undergoing the operation or the alternate decision to have the child. One end of the station is described with imagery of being dry and barren whereas the other end is fertile filled with tress and far away is a river that can be seen. ...ks?” (Hemingway 212). This implies that the couples do not lead very meaningful lives and the girl wants change, a certain direction and purpose and feels that the baby will change her life for the better. Also worth noting is that one of the few things they do together anymore is drinking new beverages however, by the end of the story one sees the man and women drinking alone symbolically suggesting their future separation and end of their relationship.
The abundance of symbolic imagery used by Hemingway in “Hills Like White Elephants” helps create the image of the situation the American and Jig face without having to really “say” it. The symbolism revolving around the location of the story, the hills, the baggage and drinks the couple share allows Hemingway maintain his minimalistic style of writing and still effectively execute the theme of the story brilliantly.
