American Dream Deferred What is the American Dream? Is it a dream to have a house, a well paying job, or to have a lot of money? The American dream is being deferred as we speak and many people still struggle to achieve their own American dream. There are many factors which can cause a person to defer their own American dream. Due to lack of jobs, foreclosure, and inflation is what can cause a dream to be deferred. In the poem “Harlem” by Langston Hughes it says “What happens to a dream deferred?” “Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun?” this lines suggest that a dream might start loosen its freshness and that over time it starts to shrivel up and become less valuable. On the fourth and fifth line it says “Or fester like a sore— And then run?” meaning that the dream just stays there and never leaves the person. On the sixth line of the poem it says “Does it stink like rotten meat?” meaning that the dream might start to lose its hope and it starts decaying slowly. On the seventh and eighth lines it says “Or crust and sugar over— like a syrupy sweet?” this lines represent procras...
