The story begins with and is enveloped by Walton’s letters to his sister. His sister is very close to him; as can be seen by the affection terms used for her and the comfort level that Walton has with her; terms such as “dear sister” and “my sister”. This relationship that Walton has with his sister is placed on the reader through his expressions and use of language. The reader is forced into the role of a character that already has some developments. Walton’s sister is a character that exists prior to the story; this can be seen by the way Walton treats his subject. Because the reader is the audience with her, the reader is pushed into that role, but not to become a part of the story, only to develop the relationship with Walton. The purpose of this suddenly close relationship is to bring credibility to the narrative of Frankenstein and ultimately bring credibility to the narrative of the monster. This is done be enveloping Walton’s letters around both these narratives. These layers sustain the relationship through the novel and allow the reader to be outside of the story, physically in another location as Walton’s sister is, but to be close and credible. This established relationship that the reader is now part of allows the emotions that Walton’s sister may have felt to be recreated and obvious to the reader. “Be Assured… I will not rashly encounter danger.” Walton reassures his sister and it is made clear to the reader that she feels concern for him due to his tendencies. This emotion that she feels is recreated by his words of comfort to her. This pathos helps to build the relationship as do the other elements in combination with it. In many circumstances, the letters also appeal to a more logical sense. Walton believes in his cause and believes that his sister (and reader) do not agree with this cause. Because of this temperament, Walton feels the need to justify his actions. So he justifies his actions with logical proof, these logical proofs appeal to the mind of the reader. This logos helps to build the relationship as do the other elements in combination with it. The story ends with the letters to complete the encirclement and enclosure of the relationship so that all the elements that helped build credibility and a relationship in the beginning are sustained throughout.
...d longs for her elder sister and mother. Frances is a good person – at heart – and is always looking out for her younger sister. Moreover, even though she has different views that her father and will always do the opposite of what is expected of her, it is seen that this insecurity is caused by James indeed. Frances feels that in order to gain security in her life, she must perform these actions. She feels compelled to live her life the way she does. Frances’s naughty and mischievous behaviour can be viewed as a weakness she possesses, and she longs to correct these weaknesses by her actions. She is not a role model by any means, but she is by no means the Devil’s advocate. A sincere heart – compelled by circumstances – does its best to make the situation turn out for the better than the worse, and Frances, through her love for her mother, inevitably does just that.
The author Thomas S. Spadley is Lynn’s father. He is the one that was with them all the time and saw all that his wife Louise tried for their daughter to understand them. The greatest qualification for him to write this book is that he is Lynn’s father. A father’s perspective is great throughout this book, as the reader I can see the intensity of what the family is going through. Since he is a math professor, and does not have a lot of knowledge in English and time, through the whole book he skips around with what they did and when. Later, on in the book that James P. Spradely, Lynn’s uncle also got involved and helped write the book.
However, as I continued to read the story I began to wonder if maybe Connie’s life was not in any way parallel to my own. I have a younger sister where she has an older sister, but that is where the similarities end. Her mother is always telling her that she should be more like June, her older sister. It seemed to me that June living with her parents at her age was unusual, but the fact that she seemed to enjoy this and was always doing things to h...
, how it drowns to his attention how much he had longed for his sister/future wife to be. Yet he never felt so lonely whilst within her company. Whether it was the fact that the burning desire driven him away. Or just his sheer highly intelligent curiosity got in the way of settling for second best.
Supporters of gun control state that to decrease crimes committed with fire arms (which amass a high majority of crimes) guns should be banned from private ownership. This removes guns from the public, therefore taking away the instrument of easily accomplishing crimes. Arthur Kellermann and Donald T. Raey, two gun control advocates, did their own research into the issue and published a discovery of their own; the 43-1 Statistic. In this statistic, Kellerman and Raey state that a gun will be used in a justified shooting one time, while forty three other people are killed by a gun unjustly, either by suicide, accident, or criminal (Heumer 9). According to these two researchers, gun ownership is not worth it. Private ownership of guns saved one life wh...
Right now the government has limited firearm purchasing only to people who pass certain steps. Gun control has risen as a controversial subject in the United States today. Many say gun control or banning of all firearms will help protect and make our country a better place. Reasons many are wanting to ban firearms are that the 2nd amendment is out dated and unjustified in this date and time. Writer Eugene Robinson states that “farmers wrote of “arms,” thinking about muskets and single shot pistols. They could not have foreseen modern rifles or high-capacity magazines.” Many agree with Mr. Robinson saying that back when the constitution was written they couldn’t have understood what was going to come in the future. Citizens also believe people have no reason to fight against intruders that come in their home that’s what the authorities are for. If people what to defend themselves why waste the money and time on having police? In this day and age why have weapons why not cut out all firearms and just be one happy country, it’s that simple, but is it really that simple? (“Assault Weapons Must Be Banned in
Throughout his life, the only relationship he was able to maintain was with his sister. On the other hand, his relationship with his parents was very strained; At one point he declared that his "entire childhood seem like a fiction"(123) due to his dad’s infidelity.
“If guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns,” is a slogan used by gun owners and their supporters. This topic was discussed at a meeting here in the United States according to the group, the Right to Keep the Bear Arms, based in Bellevue, Washington. Most gun loving Americans would tend to agree with that statement, which, based on the current rhetoric coming out of Washington D.C., may become a reality in the lifetime of today’s teens. If Americans have not been keeping up with the news lately then they might be surprised to know that gun rights are, for a lack of better term, are under fire. Although, on almost a daily basis, there seems to be news stories about shootings and killing’s throughout America by criminals and people with mental issues, it seems that only law abiding gun owners are going to suffer the most by any new gun restricting laws that may be passed by lawmakers in the United States. Excessive gun control would take away the rights of law abiding citizens to protect themselves and their property. It could also effect the recreational use of guns, and would not keep guns from criminals.
The controversy with gun control that has developed over the past century has had many causes. Over the past century, since the first act of gun control policy was past in 1911 there has been an auterauge of gun control acts that have followed in its place. These acts have helped to insure the safety of the public from gun violence. Prior to the 20th century, no gun laws were instated for public protection and people were able to obtain a firearm without a license or permit. Today there are over 20,000 laws (Crimes and Criminal procedure, index) that are instated which limit the use of firearms to certain individuals that do not meet the proper criteria....
The story Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus made different feelings to me. I read it first time about five years ago, and when I read it now, I understood the concept differently.
The gun-affiliated death toll throughout the U.S. must come to a turning point. Taking away the right to own guns could result in only criminals having gun access. The important thing to understand is that in a society where a normal citizen and criminals have gun access the likelihood of a law abiding citizen getting shot, when both parties are in possession of a firearm, is more likely than if only criminals have firearms. Firearms being banned could not seem too pleasing as a short-term solution but people must also think outside of their
As Olga Kharif from nbcnews.com has made clear that “ Many schools have banned cell phones in school, but educators have begun changing their rule of using cell phones in school and are using them for research and other useful things. Olga Kharif point is that some classrooms have found a way for cell phones to be useful in some class for research and brainstorming any kind of ideas for any project or class work, the same as any type of laptop or computer does. Josh Higgins from Usatoday.com agrees when stating that cell phones are useful in school by providing students with help and also teachers and staff are using phonesto keep track of students work and other things. The essence of Josh Higgins viewpoint is that cell phones are useful in many ways and that it could educate other students that cell phones can also be used for classwork and collaborating.Of course, it is possible to disagree with the view that cell phones are going to be useful and could help students learn and instead argue that using cell phones is a waste of time and won’t help students learn. Also, people would say that cell phones that are used in school are going to have a negative impact on students education because of how easy cell phones can help them find the answer on any type of work or even a take home test. However, the weight of the evidence is on the other side. What must be remembered is that cell phones are used as a tool. They could help with many kids who are having a hard time with something in school and can help collaborate with other students with research, classwork or a group project and it could help them a lot.But also remember that in some schools, some of the wifi that teachers and principles used can be tracked and that could lead to a student being caught on an inappropriate website or talking to another student in a different
One reason to consider the introduction of cell phones in learning is to promote digital etiquette, a concept that is foreign to most people. According to Liz Kolb (the author of “Toys to Tools”) Digital etiquette is “a basic set of rules you should follow in order to make the internet better for others, and better for you.” Kolb says in her book that “an educator’s job is to help students navigate and stay safe in their media world”. Students often are unaware to the consequences of their use and misuse of technology. Currently, many students do not overthink about protecting their own privacy. For example 55% of students do not care whether the digital material they use is copyrighted. Students ages 10 to 17 often do not take in appropriate cell phone use. According to Kolb “While nine out of ten 10- to 17- year olds believe that they are courteous on their cell phones, 52% admit to sending text messages at the movie theater, while 28% admit to sending texts at the dinner table.” These statistics show that teens are unaware with cell pho...
Does using a cell phone in class affect a student’s learning? Cell phones can be a benefit in school by replacing other materials in the classroom. The materials cell phones can replace are: dictionaries, timers, calculators, and other items that are usually used in the classroom. Students can improve their projects by using their cell phone to record data. Also, many websites can help students send answers to their teachers via text messages. But, cell phones are also inadequate in the classroom. Cell phones have the possibility to make emergency situations worse than what they would normally be. Students can take inappropriate pictures of other students. They also can take pictures of their tests for later classes. Most importantly, cell phones cause distractions to every student. Even though cell phones can save schools thousands of dollars, they still cause distractions during classes and should not be allowed.
It’s not a reasonable defense for using cell phones. You can spend time for your cell phones at home. I can say that students must always be busy in the classroom, they all have their works to do instead of connecting with peers in other countries. Why don’t they use their own time to do that? That skill doesn’t need teachers to teach you how, but teachers are really necessary for explaining other lessons. As I know, today’s children probably don’t need teachers for their digital devices, most of them learn by themselves.
