Have you ever experienced such a conversation when you had no understanding of what was particularly being discussed? How about finding yourself caught up in an argument or a discussion completely lost and frustrated yet still played along as if everything was going smoothly? Ernest Hemingway's short story "Hills Like White Elephants," illustrates the relationship of a couple that cannot communicate with one another in an effective manner. Hemingway incorporates the use of character to develop the theme of communication. The readers are initially presented with a couple conversing in a public area during a crisis point in their relationship. The author’s pragmatic approach to the characters’ point of view was a technique that allowed the tension between the couple to distance themselves from the story. Such a technique portrays the difficulty of interaction and understanding between the two characters. Hemingway’s purpose was to leave his readers guessing by a deep interpretation of the text. We, as the readers, are forced to figure out why and what is trying to be said throughout the frustrating and unsettled discussion. The distance and lack of a successful communication between a couple waiting to board a train heading to Madrid are much alike two parallel railroad tracks that will never make contact. The story begins with an introduction of the characters and the limited information we receive about them as the author describes them as, “The American and the girl” (120). Hemingway does a remarkable job in creating a vague setting along with a lifeless atmosphere throughout the entire story. Consequently, Hemingway’s purpose is for the audience to sense the isolation between the couple to the extent that even the audience feel... ... middle of paper ... ...Jig could’ve responded that the operation is not what she had in mind and therefore, I am going to keep this baby. Such an exchange is the normal and proper way to let your partner truly know what you feel. Therefore, I believe that the art of this particular fictional piece of writing teaches us to always truly be happy with ourselves to the extent where we can happily make our own decisions. Moreover, confidence is vital for overcoming the power of suggestion in life. It can be beneficial to always be open to suggestion, but the moment a heartfelt advice turns into a suggestion based on self-interest instead, like what we witness in “Hills Like White Elephants,” the purpose of assistance is defeated. A rule in life that I always like to live by, and hopefully Jig can learn from, is the expression that we are the ones who are in complete control over our destinies.
