Over the Thanksgiving break I was able to interview Jennifer Thorpe-Moscon, Ph.D. She is in the field of social psychology and also the Vice President of Marketing and Research for Body Care by Emylee, a company that creates organic and cruelty-free body, skin and hair products. Dr. Thorpe-Moscon works in New York City and was previously an adjunct instructor at New York University, where she received her Ph.D. in Psychology. I was introduced to her by my brother, Adam, who served his mission in New York City. We had a problem trying to get our schedules to match up so we had to result to having the interview over email. But this was a great opportunity for me to learn more about psychology and it gave me many different ideas of what I would like to do in the future.
To start off I thought that psychology was just one specific career choice. I didn’t know there were so many different types of psychologist out there. So the first question I had for Jennifer was, what is social psychology? She responded to me saying, “Broadly speaking, social psychology is the study of people and their interactions in groups of various sizes. Social psychology can also examine how groups, and societies interact with one another, keeping the focus on the behavior of the individual rather than society as a system. It is a broad field that has innumerable applications to everyday life”. To me this also sounds a bit like humanistic psychology that focuses on the feelings and thoughts of the client and helping them realize what their problem is. I was really intrigued by that connection because I wrote about how humanistic psychology is my favorite type of psychology.
Another question that I asked Jennifer was, what kind of person would make a good so...
... middle of paper ...
... I wanted to ask her this question so I could try to narrow it down a bit. She responded but saying “for those who may not want the traditional academic path, it may be hard to find information or opportunities to get non-academic experience”. She recommended that I find a social psychology program and advisor that are good matches for your interests. Also she then told me that one of the greatest resources is the Association for Psychological Science.
I had a lot of fun reading the responses of Jennifer and being able to get to know her just a little bit more over emails. Now I have a deeper sense of a career that I have definitely thought about in psychology. I think having us do this assignment is a really good idea because there is a difference between just learning about the different types of psychologist than actually talking to one in person or over emails.

Ever since I was a child, I was entranced with psychology, but only saw it as a hobby. Now, my interest is in behavior and forensic psychology. The way people behave is fascinating for me to learn about, and any classes that I can take now that would help me in the future are always welcome. Psychology has always interesting to me, but I did not know what exactly it was until seventh grade when one of my friends told me how they had a therapist for her depression. At first, I thought that therapists only listened to people’s problems and then magically solved them, but I soon learned that that wasn’t the case. There were ups and downs with my friend, and she never really got ‘better’ in the sense of her being back to her old self, but therapy did help. When I saw her process, I was intrigued. I always knew that I wanted to help people, but knew no other way than community service. It was through my friend that I finally figured out the answer to what I wanted to do with my
I sense that there is an importance to learn the various aspects of our minds and how it works to navigate through our information rich environment and to embrace the similarities and differences that we have. I personally hope that psychology will help me understand my place in this world and how, with the knowledge I have acquired to the study of psychology, help make the world an easier place to live in. There has been too many a time where we humans have made uneducated decisions that affected the lives of other people and regret to tell the tale. I wish that each and every individual will have the chance to learn psychology to further understand our thoughts and behavior because, with psychology, we have a greater chance to mold a better future for the next
Psychology is an ever growing field in today’s job field. Psychology comes from the Greek words “psych” meaning soul and “ology” meaning logic, it translates to “the science of the soul” (Ferguson). It was founded by a man named Wilhelm Wundt, he founded experimental psychology which later led to others discovering more in psychology Psychology is both a science and a profession, it is counted as a science because it’s about understanding people's behavior (Ferguson). Psychology is a great and interesting career choice for many generations
Basically saying that yes psychology is more than a clinic or office career but there is also an entire “exotic” field of psychology with different travel opportunities. Different types of traveling psychologists include; military, sports, environmental, forensics, circus, NASA, google, filmmakers, traffic, and etc. (“while the traditional image of a psychologist may be someone stuck behind a desk all day seeing patient after patient, in reality, many psychology careers offer frequent travel. In many cases a patient wont visit them the psychologists visits the patient, some even travel overseas”). While everyone assume it is a boring desk job it can simply become an opportunity to travel and do what you love, helping people mentally and emotionally. With that being said psychologists have many different fields, and just because it seems unentertaining look into all the other options, each year hundreds of thousands of undergraduates decide to become psychology majors, along the way they gain a greater knowledge of all the fields and branches in psychology. With plenty of education and experience comes the opportunity to advance in your
This weeks studies included information addressing the differences between a practitioner-scholar at a Masters level of learning and a scholar-practitioner at a Doctorates level of learning. In my own words, I will address my understanding of the difference between the two, what it means to be a practitioner-scholar within the field of psychology, how my knowledge of this model has changed my vision and goals in the field, and what the top three aspect of knowledge and skill that I need to develop to become a psychology practitioner-scholar.
Interacting with my professors as a teacher's assistant and research assistant gave me a chance to discover at a more personal level what psychology is all about. Although I am seeking a M.A. in General Psychology at this time, I do have specific goals for my future. I hope to continue my education past the M.A. and receive a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, counseling individuals and eventually acquiring a teaching position with a college or university.
My vision as a practitioner scholar in the field of psychology lies in clinical counseling. As a clinical counselor
The practice of researching human behavior, which dates back to most ancient civilizations, has become better understood and more effective over time. This research led to modern psychology and has become increasingly broad since the first notion that one person could observe and measure the reasoning behind another person’s actions. Researchers in the field can study psychology as a whole or one of the various sub-disciplines that psychology breaks down into. These sub-disciplines range from the psychology of learning to fringe theoretical psychology. The men and women who conduct studies in the psychological field, referred to as psychologists, continue research in their sub-disciplines to add to the knowledge of the community. Psychologists focus on the study of the mind while clinicians treat individuals that suffer from psychological disorders. Now that I have covered psychology’s growth, I will move on to the ways that psychology currently impacts the world.
I was in a remote village in the Peruvian Andes conducting art therapy with prisoners when I realized this was the most meaningful experience of my life, and it should not be. The study and practice of psychology are the place where my humanitarian and intellectual interests align. I am applying to the clinical psychology program to fulfil the training I need to continue to make meaningful contributions to society and also contribute to the field of psychology through research. A family illness that is now happily behind me delayed me from doing so sooner.
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
I was able to assist my dad while he was going through a rough time with my mom. My dad knows who psychologists are, but being able to explain the significance of psychology and encouraging him to see one made me happy. It not only helped him recover with his personal issues, but also helped him understand what my mom is going through. In addition, this topic has impacted me for future use, not only for myself, but for others I can share this knowledge with. The importance of psychology, coping with stress, or knowing what the different types of psychologists can all be applied to my career towards junior personnel, through educating them, or the application of my everyday life, and benefiting my outlook.
Psychology deals with the study of mental processes and a variety of behaviors. In order to fully comprehend ourselves, we need to understand the causes of our behaviors and our outlook on life. Habits and behaviors have positive and negative effects in our life. When we know ourselves and learn about our unique personality, we can develop and pursue goals. Psychology also helps us to understand other people and the differences of people. Gaining this knowledge can improve the relationships and enhance our communication skills. Throughout the psychology course I gained knowledge in various areas, and the topics that impacted me the most included: the introvert, anxiety disorders, stress management, self discipline and how to develop strong relationships.
As I gradually make my way through this semester, I have come to realize that I am called to go into Psychology. I love watching people and trying to figure out why they act the way that they do. I, also, love knowing that I have finally figured out what careers I want to pursue. I want to become either a clinical or counseling psychologist, which both have the same requirements for everything – majors , classes, ect. So, I do not have to decide right off the bat on which career I want to pursue. Since I am planning on majoring in Psychology, I decide to do some research on my own, as well as go to a major’s fair hosted at the IU Southeast campus.
Psychology explores human mental process and human behavior then tries to find a way to treat or make it better. There are different techniques and steps used to treat a patient. What really excites me is, from psychology I learn backgrounds, religious beliefs, race and other factors that determine human behavior. I learned many different disorders from this class. Everybody has some disorders in their lives. And that one little disorder can
