Women are oppressed whether they are in first world countries or third world countries. Around the world, women are marginalized from political and decision-making positions while men usually dominate these positions. The belief that women are oppressed is due to what the society has set. Since the beginning of human times, female sex has been seen as less than men. Women are seen as housewives and child bearers, while men are seen a breadwinners. Not all women conform to what society expects of them. Many women in the world have positions men cannot or do not usually do. Although there are still tensions against women rights, women are gradually negotiating the forces that marginalize them.
Japanese society places gender roles with women in the private sphere and men in the public sphere. “Japanese Mothers and Obento: The Lunch-Box as Ideological State Apparatus” by Anne Allison explains, from her observations, the Japanese culture and the how Japanese mother internalizes the regularizing state apparatuses for obentos. Obento, a boxed lunch, is an everyday practice of Japanese life. Japanese women take 20 to 45 minutes to prepare a higly detailed, healthy and artsy obentos for their children. These lunch boxes are then judged by the teachers to decide whether or not the children will do well in school or not. Women in Japan conformed to the traditions and teachings that their ancestors have passed on. In Japan, nursery school teaches children how to be Japanese and the roles in the society. “The obento shows the mother’s commitment for the success of their children and to what the child will become. ...ndoubtedly have oppression but it is whether people conform to them or not. In America, women’s rights were not established until a century ago. Women are taking over high positions and becoming powerful moguls. Mary Jones is highly respected as a balm healer in a job with mainly women working in this position. But in country like Japan, women conform to the regulated state apparatuses placed upon to sustain the culture. Women create obentos and actively take part in the nursery school like a job. On the other hand, Malaysian women that works in factories internalizes the oppressive form of corporate global industries. These women are used because of their specialized biological features that allow faster production. All women are oppressed but it depends on the women whether or not they want to conform to the society or rebel against the culture they grew up with.
