LITERARY ANALYSIS Golding’s Lord of the Flies is a classic as well as a frequently banned, and challenged book. His novels have been written during the darkest events in human history (see fact insert for more). The fact that he wrote during these dark times really shaped him as a person as well as his books. In Lord of the Flies his most popular book and the book I will be writing about. In this book there is a lot of symbolism as well as deeply layered conflict. To read you must read every word to understand the book because a lot is packed into what looks like a short read. Anyway Lord of the Flies overall portrays human kind as Evil because of the savagery shown on the island and the heavy war going on outside of it. Symbols Symbols are important to Lord of the Flies because there are so many and if you don’t understand them you might as well throw the book away. The most important symbols is the conch that Piggy had found. They determined that “the conch will signal assemblies” (Golding, 42). Also whenever someone wanted to speak they had to have the conch. This shows that the conch represents unity and effectively runs meetings which gives it democratic power. When Jack decides to leave and take everyone but Ralph and Piggy, Ralph then decides try and signal them with the conch but only gets stones thrown at him. When Roger rolls a boulder onto Piggy the conch broke and the island fell into chaos. This was one of the main symbols throughout the book. It is when the conch also started to lose power when the savagery overcame it. Savagery in this book is so powerful and so evil it took down one of the strongest forms of peace on the island. Conflict Lord of the Flies focuses on the fights between civilization and ... ... middle of paper ... ...can’t blame the writer for writing what easily could happen on an island, and keep in mind none of them are older than 12 years old and with no adults around there isn’t much order. A final reason for this book to stay on the shelves of libraries is that this book has so much literary value. This book is great to teach an advanced group of readers & a high school class. This book requires advanced readers to follow the symbolism that is harder to pick up on. There aren’t many books that use as many symbols as he did which makes it the perfect book to teach. But with so many people challenging this book a lot of people don’t get that privilege. Lord of the Flies should be kept on school and library shelves. Do you want people to miss out on good education? Do you want people kept from the enjoyment of this book? Don’t let this book be challenged.
