What is racism? Racism is defined as the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races (Racism 1). To look back in past events one could see that America has always been somewhat racist. The Caucasian race did own another race as slaves which we all know were African Americans. Although, once the amendment was passed that set the African Americans free, it would seem that our days of being racist were over and every race would be seen as equal. This however is definitely not the case. In my opinion racism is still very much alive in today’s society. People are discriminated everyday in life no matter what color their skin is. I believe that people should be defined on what they have accomplished and what they have achieved, and race should not play a factor. Anyone who says that racism is gone and a thing of the past, is sadly mistaken and blind to the world they live in. Racism occurs in everyday life, in sports, on TV, on the internet, even out in a public setting. Racism will continue to exist as long as humans judge and point out the flaws they see in others.
On April 9, 2014 a recording was captured by TMZ of a man arguing with his girlfriend that he was mad about her posting photos of her on Instagram with black people, he continued to say that he did not want her to bring any black people to the games (Smith 1). This alleged man arguing with his girlfriend was Donald Sterling, owner of the NBA basketball Team Los Angeles Clippers. He was condemned as a “racist” and players from his team rebelled by taking off their practice jerseys and wearing black socks and black shoes as a mini protest. T...

The last lesson that Scout learns throughout this book is that life is not fair. This relates also to Tom’s conviction because he was clearly seen as innocent but the jury would not accept it just because he was black. It also relates to the Scottsboro Boys because they were also charged with a crime they did not commit, all because of the color of their skin, something they have no control over. Racism no matter how you see it is definitely still here and well alive as it was back then. I just believe that it is not as violent and that how the blacks act now, gives them the stereotypes that have come to be attached to their race. So, in conclusion yes racism is still alive and well in America, but it is not as violent and deadly as it was in previous times. This is due to all the new laws that have been put into place to try and limit discrimination.
