When I was around ten years old, my parents decided to move to the United States, but I had very little experience in speaking English. Even though the local Thai Elementary School that I attended provided English class, it was not even nearly enough for what lay ahead. I have struggled making conversation with anyone. As a foreigner living in a new country, it was very difficult for me to communicate and understand what others were saying. Even though I wanted to return to Thailand to the culture and the environment that I was accustomed to, I was persevered to learn the English language so that I could communicate like everyone else. It did not take long to learn English to be able to use it in my everyday life and adapt to the new environment. That was when I realized that learning new language is not as difficult as I thought. ... One of the things I like about volunteering at senior home is the fact that I can practice my Japanese with the seniors there. Because I normally do not speak Japanese outside my Japanese class, I struggled most of the time to use it in my every day's life. Most seniors do not have any understanding of English language, so I constantly have to think of Japanese words or phrases that I learned in class to talk to them. Another thing I like about volunteering at senior home is how HandsOnTokyo always have interesting activities for the seniors. Last time during Christmas, the volunteers had to sing Christmas songs for the seniors, which they seem to enjoy it. Through this activity, I learned how to interact with the seniors and some of them were really fun to talk with. That is the main reason why I enjoyed coming to this senior home and regularly volunteering there.
