Compare the story ''Gentleman, your verdict” to the Robert Latimer case. Both of the story “Gentleman, your verdict'', and Robert Latimer case are painful to read or hear about. They seem to be very likewise in the main idea while reading for the first time. Although, a closer read of both of the stories show us some fundamental differences as well. Firstly, I will investigate the differences of both of the situations. Captain Oram was a Commander who was stuck on a submarine on mid Atlantic ocean with his crews. On the other hand, Robert was a farmer of Saskatchewan was watching his 12-years-old daughter leading a life worse than death. Captain Oram did not have much time to take his decisions as opposed to Robert who was dealing with the situation from a long time. Again, Oram had to think more professionally because it was his crews, and he had to take the best decision to save their life according to his professional code. Robert's decision was fully emotional because he was dealing with his daughter. Moreover, they had different ways of killing. Robert killed his daughter b...
case. When you take the time to analyze both story, you come to find that both have the same
This essay will compare and contrast the protagonist/antagonist's relationship with each other and the other jurors in the play and in the movie versions of Reginald Rose's 12 Angry Men. There aren't any changes made to the key part of the story, but yet the minor changes made in making the movie adaptation produce a different picture than what one imagines when reading the drama in the form of a play. First off, the settings in the movie are a great deal more fleshed out. In the play, the scene begins with the jurors regarding the judge's final statements concerning the case in the courtroom and then walking out into the jury room. In the movie, the audience is placed in the role of the invisible casual observer, who for perhaps the first 5 minutes of the movie, walks throughout the court building passing other court rooms, lawyers, defendants, security officers, elevators, etc.
In the gruesome novel, All Quiet On The Western Front, Erich Maria Remarque, tells a story of a young boy named Paul Bäumer that fights in World War I as a German soldier. Paul is the protagonist and the narrator for most of the novel. The reader can see, through Paul, the horrors of war. Critics agree that the novel is believable. “Paul's story is the realization of the horror of war…” (Tighe 60). The setting of the novel is in the trenches of the Western Front in France and in Germany. There are numerous cultural aspects going on within this anti-war novel. Remarque accurately portrays the culture aspects of, male roles, family relations, the economy, and historical references to life during World War I in Germany and France for the soldiers on the Western front during the last two years of Word War I between 1916 and 1918.
Guilty or not guilty? This the key question during the murder trial of a young man accused of fatally stabbing his father. The play 12 Angry Men, by Reginald Rose, introduces to the audience twelve members of a jury made up of contrasting men from various backgrounds. One of the most critical elements of the play is how the personalities and experiences of these men influence their initial majority vote of guilty. Three of the most influential members include juror #3, juror #10, and juror #11. Their past experiences and personal bias determine their thoughts and opinions on the case. Therefore, how a person feels inside is reflected in his/her thoughts, opinions, and behavior.
After being stranded for twenty days and being without food for the past eight days, two of the men, Dudley and Stevens, contrived to kill the boy, Parker, so that they might sate their hunger on his flesh. The next day Dudley with the support of Stephens killed the boy, Parker, while he lay resting on the floor of the boat. It should be noted that the third man, Brooks, had three times dissented from participating in Dudley and Parker’s vile scheme.
In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch says, "Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit em', but remember it's a sin To Kill a Mockingbird." This quote demonstrates Atticus's firm belioef in the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule is to treat others how you want to be treated. Atticus follows the Golden Rule throughout the novel, including while defending Tom Robinson, a local African American accused of raping Mayella Ewell. Due to Atticus's firm belief in the Golden Rule and the fact he must live with himself before others and tries to teach his children the right thing to do, it makes sense for him to defend Tom Robinson.
Race has had a major impact on our society in every single aspect of our lives. Racism is taken to an even larger scale in a sports setting. Emotions are high and people say things about other people without thinking. This is not something that has just started to occur; these things have been happening for many, many years. Sport brings out a whole different type of person whether it is the player or even a fan. Whichever it may be, both have a significant impact on how racism is involved in sport. Racism 70 years ago was a very difficult time for the African American culture. Back then “the only difference between the black man shining shoes in the ghetto and the black sprinter is that the shoeshine man is a nigger and the sprinter is a fast nigger.”(counterpunch.com) The sports world is more diverse than it was back then, but has it truly changed?
It would seem relatively orthodox and banal to suggest that killing for fun is the type of action that is vacuous, full of folly and the very opposite of innocuous. Recreational hunters, or should they be allowed the moniker of “Slaughterers” are in fact, active participants in the killing for thrill that should be admonished. These same killers justify their irrational slaughtering and debauchery through erroneous arguments that are wholly vacuous. Nonetheless, killing anything for whatever joy or competition that could be rendered from doing so is savage. Overall, Recreational hunting should be abated or completely annulled or any form of interdiction should be put on it for its absurd and ignoble breach of moral principle, where it penetrates the lives of innocent animals for fun.
Throughout literature, relationships can often be found between the author of a story and the story that he writes. In Geoffrey Chaucer's frame story, Canterbury Tales, many of the characters make this idea evident with the tales that they tell. A distinct relationship can be made between the character of the Pardoner and the tale that he tells.
Moving on to the next part of the case, the police finds out that Adam's sister, Eve, has images of bestiality and necrophilia saved on her computer. Both bestiality and necrophilia fall under the category of extreme pornography. Extreme pornography usually refer to any sexual representations that entail violence and are only published for sexual arousal. The Criminal Justice and Immigration Act (CJIA) 2008 strictly forbids the possession of any kind of images deemed to be pornographic and/or extreme. Subsection (6) and (7) describes in detail the description of extreme representations; having "sexual intercourse or oral sex with animal" and having "sexual interference with human corpse" are both stated on the section 63(7) of the CJIA. In addition, any act that "threatens a person's life, ... which results..., in serious injury to a person's anus, breasts, or genitals, ... or is grossly offensive..." are also regulated under the same law. Subsection (8) states that possessing not only hard copies of the images but also computer-stored data is subject to being prosecuted. Thus, the image files Eve had of bestiality and necrophilia on her computer are illegal under CJIA s.63(1). The convict can be punished with two years of imprisonment if faced with these charges.
As a first year college student this course has taught me many core aspects to writing and critical thinking. Writing has not been one my strongest points in education, but I feel this course has helped me make strides in writing in many ways. This course has enlightened me on various aspects of writing and has taught me many different ways of writing quality essays. A few things that this course has taught me is how construct an acceptable thesis statement, how to prove my points in body paragraphs, and how to properly cite sources. Although I have learned an immense deal of writing skills within this course there some things I feel I can improve upon, such as, introductions and properly heading papers.
One would never be capable of living through the horrific war in Vietnam without developing any sort of coping mechanism. Some preferred self-abusing mechanisms which include dope and alcohol, while others developed psychological mechanisms which almost ‘grew on them like a parasite’. Although it is the most gruesome technique, killing others was also a way for soldiers to get through the war. Of all these methods to survive the war, there is no better or worse method, due to the fact that different things worked for different soldiers. Unquestionably, drinking and smoking was the most obvious way to cope with the war. Be it legal or not, it was the most common approach to dealing with guilt, fear, and anxiety caused by the war.
The Trial is Kafka’s exploration of the most extreme consequences of denying one’s own guilt and thus one’s own humanity. In some senses, it serves as a warning, or a sort of parable of its own, and in others it is simply an expression of anguish. The story serves to warn against thinking so highly of oneself that we only interpret infractions of the outright law as guilt. If we are to be truly innocent and humble beings, we must recognize our own innate guilt as human and accept it. If we do not, we will constantly be obsessed by our “state of apparent acquittals."
As young adults, we cannot recall a life without the web. The web is young because recently it had its 25th anniversary. 25 years ago ,Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau changed the world forever. According to boutell.com, “ In 1989, while working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research), both men made proposals for hypertext systems…And in late 1990 and early 1991, Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first web browser.” These men started the technology phenomena, but as time progressed, society started to become more advanced. People do not interact the same with each other. As we move on forward, the definition of a friend is lost because of the indecency of social media. The growth of social media causes people to question what a friend is because people do not understand the difference between interacting face to face, rather than socializing on the web. As more social media sites come to the market, people are social without going out. The growth of social media causes people to think, act, and interact differently, causing the meaning of friendship to be lost, because of the growth of the web.
