How Moonshiners Took Advantage of Law Enforcement In addition to selling and transporting alcohol, moonshiners started becoming tactical individuals. Rather than simply fleeing from the authorities when caught, they attempted to get a competitive edge on law enforcement. Within only a few years of the 18th amendment being ratified, moonshiners were becoming intelligent in how they operate. Consequently, moonshiners figured out ways to tap prohibition wires. As early as 1922, prohibition officials suspected criminal activity when a maintenance man at headquarters found an unidentifiable object in a prohibition office. Officials believed that it was relatively easy to tap their phone wires and listen in on private conversations. In addition, by tapping law enforcements telephones, moonshiners were able to “get a line on just how much the officials know and their probable action” . Furthermore, moonshiners were able to be aware of up and coming raids and investigations; this information proved to be beneficial for moonshiners and a nightmare for law enforcement. Additional Criminal Activity Moonshiners were not the only source of crime during the prohibition era; there were other groups of individuals called “bandits”; these bandits sought out to steal bulk loads of alcohol. A firsthand experience was captured in 1920 when two truckloads of rum were stolen by eight armored men from a garage . These armored men posed as prohibition officers in order to enter the garage. Once the men entered the garage, they continued to beat the guards and take the trucks full of alcohol. This example of violence and criminal activity is one of many. Also, the government spending used to enforce the law negatively affected budgets and caused government spending in other areas to be decreased or cut. Between an increase in law enforcement and no additional tax revenue from liquor, the United States economy was rapidly falling into a downward spiral. By the year 1929, the United States fell in an economic depression and the prohibition was believed to be one of the many reasons for it. In an attempt to dig the United States out of an economic depression and repeal an unsuccessful law, a call was made to end prohibition; this occurred in the year 1933. By allowing the sale, manufacturing and transporting of alcohol legal again, the economy was given a jump start and was able to development; while boosting the economy .
