Depression and Suicide in College Students

Depression and suicidal thoughts have become an increasing problem among college students today and it affects their academic performance and their social performance. College students that struggle with depression are going to face multiple problems and some even take their own life. There are many causes of the depression the students face but there is no specific medication that will completely cure a person. There are multiple reasons why a college student would be depressed but sometimes the student will show no signs of depression.
However, there are some symptoms that students will show indicating they might be depressed. Some of the symptoms include fatigue, angry outbursts; lost interest in normal activities and trouble concentrating (College Depression). One of the major problems with depression is that if it’s left untreated or undetected it can lead to suicide which is the second leading cause of death among college students today (Snyder).
The causes of depression among college students vary by students but, generally there are a few reasons why students feel depressed. One of the biggest reasons is that for most students this is the first time they are living away from home and they miss their family and friends. For other students making new friends at college can be a challenge and it can be extremely hard if they do not make friends within the first few weeks. When college students who were straight A students in high school find themselves not being able to repeat that in college it can lead to major depression.
