Do our judgment of others defined by the symbols they signify?
Are judgment of others defined by the symbols they signify? Why do we judge people based on how they appear? From the min we see somebody wearing bagging jeans, big shirts, just the whole package. We take them to be no good. When that’s not always the case . Do we look at them for what they symbolize? By the way they walk, talk, act. Names and titles always symbolizes a person. It describes a persons outlook. When you hear psycho. We would think that the person is crazy. And would know to stay away.
Why do we judge people based on how they appear? When I was first saying bout the baggy jeans, big shirts. We look at them basally to be bad because most people who dress like that are. If I were to dress up as a police and walk down the street people will always come to me asking for help or something that a police individual would do. With Hester and scarlet letter. In the book people who wear the scarlet letter are known to have done something bad. And so they look down on her. With Mr. Dimsdale he is look upon as a someone who has no sin. Ideal. Just on what we appear to be.
Do we look at them for what they symbolize? of course we do. Its not right. But lets take for sample an old guy with baggy cut up clothes, long bread, just sitting down in a corner of a street. We take the old man don’t have a job, car, education, no life. And that just may be the case. But how a person symbolizes themselves to be that’s what we take them for. If a young lady comes in with her hair in a bun and very covered up, No make-up. Always keeps her head down .You take her to be shy , keep to herself or something like that. Just by her just doing all that. We take her to symbolizes a shy lady. As well as Mrs. Hibbins. She acts a witch. Everybody is going to take her to be one .
Names and titles always symbolizes the person. With teenagers, society looks at teens to be wild, out of control people that just want to party. Just because of what their named “teens” .
Throughout the novel, there are many judgements made based on only appearance. For example when Janie is entering town at the beginning of the story, the ladies on the proch gossip saying things like,
The way our culture has a tendency to view other individuals by there appearance will probably never change. In some way everyone has it set in his or her mind what makes a person "perfect". These characteristics include personal appearance, wealth and intelligence. We do not always get the chance to get to know a person, but rather make assumptions. Two poems, which reveal different perceptions of someone, include Richard Cory and The Barbie Doll.
When an individual unintentionally enters a room full of an unfamiliar crowd, he or she is bound to be embarrassed, but also have an apprehensive sensation of how others in that room will distinguish them. A situation like that establishes a moment in which that person realizes that all eyes are gaping at that individual. Just when that person could consider forgetting what just happened, unfortunately judgments start circulating among the unfamiliar crowd. As most people know, judgments are based off of a person’s appearance, race, religion, or a quality that doesn’t appeal to the person analyzing them. Obviously, judging is something that takes place whether someone likes it or not, but there are certain limits to it that many cross by adding
Teenagers revolve around being socially active and being a part of the “In crowd”. Teens are usually part
In the movie we learn that appearances can be very misleading but, that doesn't give us the right to judge a person by looks. For example, the Witch of the Waste seemed to be a normal woman when she first entered Sophie's hat shop. But, only to find out a couple of minutes later that she so happened to be an evil witch. This was just one example.
...oday, regardless of how much we have advanced. We judge everyone regardless of what someone may say. It happens automatically, we will look at someone and try to place him or her in to a neat box. It may be stereotyping, and wrong, but it still happens. People's marks make it easier to do so.
People always say never judged a person by their cover, yet some of us still do it without even trying sometimes. I have done this on multiple occasions without really trying to judge a person. I once had an experience where I was trying out for a new club team and I saw this girl who looked really mean and scary because of the expression on her face. I always thought if I ever talk to her she would be mean, but one practice we started to talk and she wasn’t at all the person I thought she ways. It turns out that she is a nice person who just takes soccer very seriously. This just shows that we can have a certain opinion on someone by their looks, but they may be completely opposite from the way they appear. There’s this book call “Freak the Mighty” which has a good way of showing the theme of not judging a person
Man by nature, judges people and things by their appearance. If a person is pleasant looking then they will be given more of a chance to express their internal self. If they are ugly, or cosmetically deformed, they usually aren't given much of a chance to show who they really are. Grotesquely ugly people are sometimes thought of as monsters, and are ostracized. Many cosmetically inferior people are afraid to go out into society. Mankind seems to be fearful of the unfamiliar and unknown. People are afraid of what they do not understand. Deformaty is something that most people can not comprehend.
First of all, whenever someone opens a book or magazine or turns on the television, they see a bunch of teens having fun. Immediately, because of how society sees teens, people think that the teens must be doing something wrong. People think that teens are out to cause trouble, when in reality, most of them mean no harm.. Many people may think that teens are dangerous and shun them for their own safety. It is almost a prejudice against the teenage race.
Society tends to misjudge people base on their appearances instead of their personality. As it’s shown on Cyrano de Bergerac story everyone misjudges people. Cyrano was ashamed of the way he looked, especially with his enormous nose that made him stand out. People didn’t care if Cyrano got his feelings hurt they thought he was a cruel person. Its bad when people tends to misjudge people without even knowing them but they just judge them by their looks instead of their personality. People shouldn’t be ashamed of the way they look and it shouldn’t stop them from accomplishing their goals and express their feelings towards the people they like.
Why are people not judged by who they are but instead what they look like? People judge people without find out who they are, what are their values, or their upbringing. Instead, they are categorized as a particular type of people based on how they appear. In Malcolm Gladwell’s essay,”Trouble Makers” he tells of how wrongful generalizations are made on a group of people or things. While in Brent Staples essay,”Just Walk on By” he tells of his personal struggled being racially profiled as an African American man. Gladwell would respond to Staples argument that he is perceived unfairly due to the generalizations that are made towards Staples.
Throughout every individuals life there are experiences of unfair judgments based on someone’s appearance. While this is never a good thing, it is an action that everyone takes part in, whether it is purposeful or not. In Frankenstein, Mary Shelley’s message is very clear as she illustrates the cruel events that take place in a society focused only on outside beauty. The central message that Shelley communicates with Frankenstein, is that while appearance is just one of an individuals many characteristics; it is always a factor they are judged on regardless of all the other qualities they may possess.
We meet strangers everywhere we go. They come from all walks of life. We can choose to ignore them or to talk to them. I have judged people based on the way they walk, talk, dress or the way they approached me. These judgments tend to stick with me even if I find out who they really are. I don 't think it is right to get judgmental when I first approach a person. I feel so bad when I find out who they really are isn 't who I thought they were. It just seems to happen so naturally. I guess it is just human nature. I can relate this to my senior high school days. Most of the judgments I made about people never helped me because it got me into bad company. In a short story ‘Strangers’, a stranger hurt and lied to Toni Morrison about who she was. She was really hurt by the stranger because she had misjudged her about who she was. She did not expect a woman, who looked so humble, would do such a thing. I can relate to her story because I also misjudged someone and ended up getting hurt.
As indicated by data, the way we treat and interpret others is based upon their appearance (Agnew, 1984). Researchers seek to understand how inferences can be made simply by another’s outward appearance or level of attractiveness. (Cogsdill, Todorov, Speike, & Banaji, 2014). Among this research, numerous studies have been conducted to understand why this phenomenon exists. Studies have suggested that face-to-trait inferences can be made within fifty milliseconds after exposure to a persons face (Todorov, Pakrashi, & Oosterhof, 2009). These specific character attributions are present cross-culturally and globally (Cogsdill et al., 2009). In order to accurately analyze face-to-trait inferences, researchers attempt to conduct studies where limited variables are present. Thus, the test subject must make inferences on another simply by their facial attractiveness. These studies have sought to examine the accuracy of personality judgments based on only photographs (Naumann et al., 2009) This studied yielded promising findings that revealed substantial accuracy in face-to-trait inferences. It should be noted, however, that there are limitations to studies such as the one previously mentioned. These studies focus exclusively on facial attractiveness, instead of physical attractiveness as a whole (Naumann et al., 2009).
First impressions are always used in setting the tone when you first meet someone. Without the luxury of knowing the persons background, you initially judge someone by the way that person introduces themselves and how they come across to you. By coming across, I mean the way a person carries themselves. For example, if the person comes across as shy and introverted, you tend to think of that person as timid and somewhat weak. However, if that same person comes across as outgoing, confident (but not to confident) and easy to talk to, you look at that person as someone you can count on and possibly a leader. This type of evaluation (even though we all do it) is for the most part not always the right way to evaluate a person.
