Engineering is the use of science and math to create buildings, machinery, and structures like bridges. There are many disciplines to the field of engineering. The top 4 disciplines are mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and electrical engineering. As well as this an engineering pathway also has other fields like nuclear, agricultural, architectural, aerospace, and other disciplines.

According to the Department of Chemical Engineering from the school of MIT, “Chemical engineering deals with design, construction, and machinery for items like dyes, acids, drugs, plastic, and synthetic rubber.” One flaw is that you must be familiar with chemistry in order to work in this field.. Mechanical engineering is a field of design and manufacture small devices and parts. According to Columbia engineering university in New York, a thing that all mechanical engineers are skilled at is the ability to analyze, design objects and systems in motion. Now civil engineering is the design and maintenance of public works like roads, bridges, water and energy systems as well as ports, railways, and airports. These type of engineers are very important to our society. And electrical engineering is basically someone who designs, develop, build, and test electrical and electronic devices like tvs, computer systems, solar power generators, microprocessor chips and other technical items. In order to become an electrical engineer, one must know a lot about electronics and computers in order to major in this field.

Mechanical engineers must be licensed of they are to do anything that affects peoples’ lives, property, or the environment. A bachelor’s degree is minimal for most companies. A master’s degree assures a better starting salary and opportunities for advancement. High school credits should have good grades in: math, physics, chemistry, biology, drafting, computer and mechanical courses. To become a mechanical engineer you should start at a high school level when you notice curiosity of how, any why things work.
This career is also incredibly rewarding because you get to see and experience your work. You can see its progress and how it looks once it is finished and then even after that you can still experience it and see how other people react to your building or the place that you have designed. Only after seeing how other people interact with your building will you know if it is a success or not which is like no other profession. Lots of professions are very instantaneous, did you save someone, did you teach properly or have you added correctly but architecture is something that lives on even after you are gone. It is something that can immortalise a person which is incredibly poetic.
My decision to become an electrical engineer was not a decision I took too long ago. It is something that I decided to pursue when I entered a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) high school. Dependant upon how well you know your history you could possibly say the wheel, the car, the airplane, the television, the autonomous robot. All of these are great ideas that have different eras in history, but they all have something in common, these creations were all invented by engineers. Do not get the misconception that engineers have been around since the dawn of time but the concept of engineering itself has. Those great revolutionaries all had ideas and solved problems which are still qualities that engineers of this day and age use. Webster defines engineering as, “the work of designing and creating large structures or new products or systems by using scientific methods.” Those people created new products so they would today be considered engineers, but they are slightly different. What makes them different is the field that they would be considered a part of. The broadest one of the oldest forms is mechanical engineering, which is my future profession.
In the most basic sense, engineering means “making things happen.” It is the practical application of science and math, the two subjects I am most passionate about, to solve everyday problems.
