San Francisco is located on the West Coast of the United States, and lies along the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula. Bayview Hunters Point is located in the southeastern corner of San Francisco bounded by Cesar Chavez Street and U.S. Highway 101 (Bayview Hunters Point Community, 2014). The neighborhood is known as the former Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and over the years the neighborhood had many redevelopment projects of residential, commercial, and recreational areas. In recent years, the community opened a new light-rail, and has many open vacant lots available for redevelopment projects in hopes that it will result in an increased wealth and opportunities for existing residents (Bayview Hunters Point Community, 2014). The majority of the Bayivew Hunters Point district consists of shipbuilding and warehousing industries, and power plants, and is known for being the strongest blue-collar community in the city (Bayview Hunters Point Community, 2014).
The impact of the neighborhood setting plays an essential role in the community’s health and the overall quality of life. The physical environment of Bayview Hunters Point also includes the city’s treatment plant, the PG&E power plant, underground petroleum storage tanks, and a third of the city’s hazardous waste generators (Katz, 2006). Bayview Hunters Point had a long history of heavy industrial use, which led to massive contamination in the community (Bayview Hunters Point Community, 2014). Due to legal victories and actions, the court required the Navy to develop a better cleanup plan for the shipyard and in 2006; the naval shipyard was involved in nuclear decontamination (Bayview Hunters Point Community, 2014). These physical environments can potentially lead to many ...

...th Services, which has been working with the residents to improve the quality of life in Bayview Hunters Point. There is a wide-range of volunteer opportunities where people can give back to the community by volunteering at hospitals, the Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, homeless shelters, and recreation and parks (SFGov, 2014). The community gives members a sense of belonging to where they live, work and attend school. The city often has festivals and parades where all communities come together and enjoy food and music. People are prideful in their community as well as their home sports teams. San Francisco is home to the 49ers NFL team as well as the Giants MLB team. These types of entertainment allow the community to be connected and be prideful of their city. Sports entertainment brings everyone together, allowing the people to feel a sense of belonging.
By giving back to the community through sporting events, it will allow for our community to grow around our sports team. Building our sports up to connect to the community will allow for many opportunities to give back to a community that is willing to help pay and support their sports teams. Whether its donating money from a game to helping kids become more involved with sports, it’s a duty of the sports teams to ensure that the support they are given is put back into the community that stands by

An extensive part of WEACT’s mission is to “promote actions that people can take in their own homes as well as addressing the larger policy issues of where industry is located and its effects on the health of neighborhood residents” (Carlson & Stroebel). In order to take these actions and help guarantee that policy makers were listening, the creation of the risk maps were vital. The risk map was able to present areas where “young people experienced foul odors, irritated throats, watery eyes, shortness of breath, and other self reported symptoms” (Corburn 55). The mission of this street science project was to safeguard the community’s health concerns, in addition to allowing further action to be implemented. However, the risk maps were not the only way that WEACT sought to address these

For this research paper, I chose to discuss the Louisiana air quality and its effects on the community. I was raised here in Baker, Louisiana which is north of Baton Rouge. Growing up I noticed something very striking and odd. We are overly exposed to chemical plants and their outputs. Driving around Baton Rouge at night and seeing a distant flame I often wonder what it really was. I wonder how this was affecting the community. How was this affecting our health? Upon doing research, I discovered it is called upset emissions. Upset emissions are unplanned events which release VOCs into the air. The Bucket Brigade which is an anti-energy group refers to emissions as accidents. Every year they release an annual report which gives information on the State of Louisiana air quality. A group called Energize LA made a rebuttal against the report. They argued that the Bucket Brigade facts were inaccurate. The views of both will be explained in detail. For this research paper, there will be a discussion on the upset emission effects on communities and health. As well how it correlates to the previous class discussions on the Clean Air Act.
Over the past year, a major contamination event shocked the nation. The Flint Michigan water crisis opened my eyes to the issues of contamination throughout the country. I soon realized that I did not know much about my neighborhood or potential hazards. I grew up in an apartment complex in North Brunswick, NJ. Nine years ago my family and I moved into our new home, which is located on the border of North Brunswick and New Brunswick. My current neighborhood is different in many ways, but I have learned to appreciate its flaws. The Residential Survey allowed me to investigate my home, which sometimes still feels very unfamiliar.
In December of 1982, the EPA found high levels of dioxin in Times Beach, forcing the locals to leave their town. “Dioxin used to be considered one of the most dangerous chemicals on the planet, but it is now under debate because of the differences between high and low-level contamination” (Chemical Conundrum).
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is widely considered the most popular Russian composer in history, who has added major contributions to the world of music in his time as well as in ours. His most influential as well as prominent works include The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker.
One of the most important times of the United States history is the blacks’ struggle to gain equality. During this time, the Civil Rights and Black Power movements played an important role in gaining the freedom that was much wanted and needed for the black Americans. But the two movements gave more to the United States than the freedoms to a race; it influenced other groups such as the student movement. The student movement has shown us that no matter whom you are, you can make your voice heard and change the world.
Then the documentary tackles Puget Sound. The Duwamish River is the largest hot spot in the nation. In 2001, the Duwamish River was classified as a “Super Fund” site. This is given to a site that will receive federal assistance for clean up. But yet, it may be too late. Puget Sound in contaminated with PCP, lead and mercury. The threat comes from the giant industrial polluters of old and from chemicals in consumers’ face creams, deodorants, prescription medicines and household cleaners that find their way into sewers, storm drains, eventually into America’s waterways and drinking water.
Love Canal is one of the most infamous toxic waste disaster in history. The Love Canal site began its life as a project linking “the upper and lower Niagara Rivers” in western New York, in order to provide power to the homes and industry that William T. Love intended to build (Beck, 1979, para. 5). In 1910 William T. Love Rn out of funding for this project, and the land was subsequently sold to Hooker Chemical Company. The Hooker Chemical Company purchased this land for the specific reason of dumping their toxic waste. At one-time process of dumping toxic waste directly into the ground was legal, as long as it was your land. However, we did not understand the future problems it would cause. Around
For our group community assessment, we assessed the neighbourhood of Moss Park. Throughout our assessment at Moss Park, we noted many of the community’s characteristics including physical environment, resources available, strengths and weaknesses etc… Moss Park is a neighbourhood located in downtown Toronto, the area is mainly comprised of worn-out buildings and houses with a satisfactory number of resources including a public library, school, health care centers, pharmacies etc… During the assessment of this neighbourhood we noticed that the physical environment was contaminated with the presence of garbage on the streets and in residential areas. As we were walking through this area during our assessment, we noticed a strong smell of cigarette smoke in many areas on the streets and in some residential areas. We also observed many people smoking in the area which creates a harmful environment of second-hand smoke. Lastly, we noted th...
More and more ways are being discovered to help treat water pollution around the world, but what needs to happen is to stop the pollution. Around the world water pollution is a definite obstacle; luckily South Carolina has everything it needs to make sure the local community household water is clean and sanitary for use. Lots of countries around the world have no access to clean water or the technology to filter their water. “Water pollution has increased in both developed and developing countries, undermining economic growth as well as the physical and environmental health and quality of life for billions of people” (Tortajada and Cecilia). In the local community water pollution has also continued to increase over the years, before 1970 all waste water was distributed directly into the Charleston Harbor. Because of this the harbor already had pollution even before people began to litter. Now polluting the Charleston Harbor is plastic bottles, Styrofoam, and many other man-made products people carelessly threw out their car windows or left on the grown. There are many more ways to clean the water and prevent pollution today than there were in from 1950-1970.
There are numerous public health problems that can be addressed in my Southside of Chicago community. Among the several public health problems facing my Southside of Chicago community there are two that are more urgent. Health education or one might say lack thereof is a problem that needs to be addressed. My community is plagued with many of the residents suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, and the killer virus known as HIV. In most cases these conditions can be prevented with healthier lifestyles and access to nutritious organic foods. In addition, environmental health is another urgent problem my community is facing. Access to clean, safe water and air is supposed to be a fundamental human right aimed at a healthy environment. Yet, my community consists a waste contaminated beach, numerous deteriorated building that are still occupied, and a countless number of restaurant and stores supplying our residents with services that are endangering their health.
